Will I get penalized for dead links..?

Ok, I decided to change the permalink structure of my wordpress blog, so all my posts now have a brand new link to them. All my old internal links are now no longer working - which I am ok with and will fix them all.

My question is this: I have a couple hundred backlinks out there to individual posts, but now none of them will be able to link to those posts anymore. When I click on one of these links, the URL stays the same as the old permalink, but the content shown is just my home page, and the tab says "nothing found..."

Are these old backlinks going to hurt my ranking?

If the broken links are on your site, it would be best to clean them up. If they are just backlinks, then it won't hurt you, but you will lose all those backlinks.

Backlinks cannot hurt your site. Only outbound links (links that are on your site) can. However, you will no longer get any link juice from those backlinks, so you may see a decrease in ranking because of this.

Do a site wide 301 redirect back to your index page, don't waste those old backlinks.

As long as your root domain is intact you can salvage old backlinks. It's possible the backlinks could get diluted from the 301 but why waste the old links?

If your running Wordpress replace the old code with this 301 redirect code inside your 404.php file.

Can google uncache a site?

Well, it is for sure once you lose your backlinks, it will hurt your website ranking. But there is a cure to get a safe corner, that is if you employ 301 redirect, it will keep in touch your oldies to the newly born blog.

incoming links / backlinks will not hurt your current website ranking. It only hurt when the broken links is within the website itself.
