stupid keyword question

ok so i'm doing some keyword research for a specfic niche and i find a keyword with no competition ( yay!! ) but it also has no search volume ( ) . is this a good keyword to use to set up a few articles ? Just wondering , please pardon my ignorance

You mean articles to post on your site? If it really has no search volume, it won't be of much help to write articles centered on that particular keyword.

I'd keep looking for a new keyword with higher search volume.

ok so let me just make sure that i understand if it has a healthy amount of search volume but no competiton .. then go for it but if there's no search volume as well as no competition then leave it alone .. right ?

Its like you've found a very new material on earth which nobody has interest in.. You may want to claim it as one day the new material might be useful but the risk is it wont.

If it's got no search volume, no one's going to be seeing your page anyway...

You want to find those keywords that have a search volume of say, above 1,000 "exact match" searches on the Google Keyword Tool.

Then the competition needs to be low.

Having said this, don't be afraid to just make up a keyword and use your head. Sometimes there are "cutting edge" keywords that don't exist yet in the Google Keyword Tool, or ANY keyword tool for that matter.

For Example: The recent release of the new Barnes and Noble Nook. You'll never find any keyword research information on it, but you'd better believe keywords related to it are being searched for.

Remember the GKWT reports the searched terms, doesn't create them.

for me - I sometimes look at the competition that is using the same KWs - for example - allintitle:KWs

If I have 20,000 or less sites using the KWs - then I might go for it.

I have a completely different take on keyword research. I tend to build sites that cover a niche extremely thoroughly and provide massive value to the reader, so I target 4 keywords per page and I target everything. Then I get some backlinks and wait for my analytics to tell me what else to promote.

I've ranked for some crazy keywords (both long and short tail) this way. It is more of a whole site approach though, and less of a single article approach.

It feels great to show atop the rankings, but unless people are searching for it...it won't result in significant traffic to your site...which is the ultimate goal. Unless of course it's a situation like JRCarson mentioned in that it's a new buzz word that wouldn't necessarily have past search numbers to draw from.

so for the most part it's ok to use your imagination and create a keyword and go from there but based on the information in gkwt , it sounds like it would take awhile before my articles ( site etc) would move up the serps or am i wrong here .. ? this seo stuff can be so confusing please help me to understang this .... again thanks for all of your responses

SEO takes time. There is no doubt about it.

Sometimes you get lucky and it goes a lot faster, but most of the time it takes time, and skill. If you want to get good at SEO get the skills you need. Lisa Parmley's InlineSEO and The Keyword Academy are both good sources to learn. If you are new, I would recommend The Keyword Academy. There program is very step by step.

No, It won't help you getting good reputation, might it could but it would take too much of your time. Better to do a bit of research more.

One thing to remember is that the keyword volumes shown in googles adword tool are nonsesne. I have never seen them come close to correct and would estimate around 10% of what google say they are.
Factor click through rates and you are talking low numbers anyway.

if your keywords do not have search volume then you should not go for it. discover new keywords with high search volume.

it will be good if you go with good keywords for making some good high quality articles. this can help you to increase your site's visibility in search engines too. more over you can have some good amount of visitors in your site too.

ok , to add to my original question suppose that the niche that i'm looking at is a very competitive niche and all of the factors of the original question are the same can i use that keyword ? ... or am i thinking to hard here ? just wondering

Try to search other keywords with quite high search volume so that your effort in writing an article will not waste.
