This is a good question and it really depends on a lot of factors such as competition and your total number of links.

When building your links you always need to keep your goal in mind. Lets go back to my "site that goes viral" analogy. What usually happens is for some reason or another people think something about a page/site is really cool and link to it and tell everyone they know and those people link to it and the next thing you know half the known universe is linking to this site.

What happens then is the site shoots up in the rankings and gets its 15 minutes of fame. What happens afterwords though is all those people move onto the next cool thing and stop building links to that site as well as possibly removing links that have already been created. The site goes back down in the rankings because Google sees that it is not "cool" any longer.

This behavior is what you emulate when you build a large number of links in a short time and then stop. It is the pattern of link building not the number that causes the problem.

The reason the steady approach is better is because your goal is to get to the top and stay there. You start off with a smaller number of links and then gradually increase them over time showing Google that you are steadily getting more popular. Now once you are at the top you do not just want to stop all your link building efforts, you can slow down but you really do not just want to stop. For one this shows Google that nobody new likes your site, for two you have no idea what your competitors are doing. Stopping your work just gives them a chance to beat you.

What I normally do is once I have a keyword ranked where I think it should be I continue for another month and then gradually decrease my linkbuilding to maybe 25% of what I was doing.

There is no "magic number" of links that you can or should build every day. Anybody that tells you differently is either lying to you or delusional or possibly both. There are way too many variables for a number to have any meaning without looking at your site, your existing link profile, your keywords, and your competition.

There should be reflection of post in your comments and comments should be with the same frequency and consistency. Do not write more than two comments on one site.

This is the answer you need. No matter if you build 3,5,10, or whatever per day. Build them at the same pace more or less and dont stop after one month...Keep going....As quoted above Google loves consistency!

Build as many links as you can, but just do not use any automated tools. Key to seo is building relevant backlinks. It will help you in the long run.

Askimet automatically filters out comments with a lot of links. Just make the name match your keyword and leave a real comment with no links in it. Especially with Google's new updates, blowing up a lot of links on one comment or one page is a bad idea.

For consistency, I've found 20 to 50 a day to be the sweet spot....but it works best if you also have content going up on a weekly basis

There is no any specific limit for getting backlinks everyday but you should get backlinks through ethical way. Keep your work average! Doing more submission will not you get ranking in just few days. So while generating links, have patience and use your effort in a effective way.

Maintain the frequency, no matter how many back links you are getting. If you get 5 links a day then keep this no. constant for weeks or month. In this way you can better evaluate your link building strategy and its effectiveness. Don't use only one method for all links, diversify it.

Well also you may want to keep in mind where your backlinks are coming from. I mean if you have 2 links coming in from 2 different websites that have a page rank of 6 and 7 respectively....then that is alot better in terms of link juice than if you were to have 20 links from 1 or 2 PR websites. So having a ton of links for the sake of having links isn't the best way to go about getting back links.

If you're doing your backlinking daily, then make as many as you can comfortably handle in your average day. Don't do 20-1-160-13-54 links... those variations are too huge.

The amount is not important, quality and consistency is. If you can do 5 links/day comfortably everyday, then set that as a goal and stick to it.

Good rule I follow is to not make more backlinks in a day then I have visitors. If you're only getting 50 visitors/day, then I think it wouldn't make very much sense to be getting more backlinks than that in a day either.

Im awful new when it comes to IM but i just have to make an input here and my view will most likely be faulty.

People keeps saying consistent backlinking (10 backlinks everyday)

In my eyes the only situation that getting 10 backlinks every single day would be if you get the exact (or close to) cisitors everyday.

in my eyes what would look really wierd is:

One day you get 1000 unique visitors and get 10 backlinks.
next day you get 5000 visitors but still the same amount of backlinks
then your host is down for 2 days, but you still get 10 backlinks.

Even if Google like consistency me if i would manually review a page would think that 10 backlinks everyday no matter what would look really suspicious.

in my opinion you should build backlinks with varied amount.
