Default Here is a simple SEO tip for you

For all people who are just starting to learn how to promote their sites, do not try multiple methods at the same time or you might end up tired without any result...

Start with one or 2 method first and when you are about to master these methods and you used to do it, add another method in your arsenal...

In order...

First month
Do forum posting and blog commenting daily. Add useful blogs into your rss readers so that you can post comment when there are new posts.

Second month
while still doing the above methods, start to write and submit articles and links to directories...

Third month onwards...
Now that you are seeing the result of what you are doing, try other methods like social bookmarking, yahoo answer, twitter, etc... but make sure your 1st and second month activities are still going... You are just adding methods but not changing...

Do not try to do all of these on the first month if your time can't handle...

Most of all, spend 80% of your time in promotion and 20% in content...

hope this will stop you from posting questions like How to promote my site, how to get traffic, how to... seo.. etc, etc.. this is very simple but fruitful if followed correctly...

To know how to do these things, get this free manual here.

Your advertising problem will stop after reading this post.

Totally agree! It's so much easier concentrating on one thing then trying to do like 5 things at once. If people become overwelmed with little results can cause some people sometimes to quit. It's like trying to build 5 websites at once instead of devoting all your time and energy into one project and doing an extremely good job at it and then moving on to the next.

I like your plan and people should try and set a schedule up or daily routine. By doing that it will become habit and you will see results from doing it. Building website traffic is a daily job for sure but it can be work done once with long term effects.

Great post and Happy Holidays!

I started with links exchanges and blog commenting. Then added Twitter, a couple of social bookmarking, Yahoo Answers and forum posting.

I agree with you that we should introduce new traffic generation strategy by phases. It works for me.

Here's where that little "related niche" dealie comes in again. Is it still beneficial to be posting to webmaster forums and other totally unrelated niches?
I'm in the health field selling foot care related products, and I'd always thought that I just be posting in health care related blogs and forums only.
Am I being too narrow here?

Posting in webmaster forums is not a problem as long as you enjoy doing it but posting in niche forums give more good result. Since you are a webmaster and running your own site, you cannot avid posting in webmaster forums but of course you must focus most of your time on health forums and blogs..

Well, posting in some of the forums is problematic mainly because it's hard to come up with something topically relevant to add.

Absolutely true. I am seeing some forum posters (including other forums) are blatantly posting for the sake of self-promotion only.

I believe they don't realize that forum posting is a give and take scenario. In fact, members will visit our site even if we don't invite them. Provided that our posts are useful to them.

So, if one is finding hard to think of something relevant to his blog, then he can also ask some interesting questions. But again, they have to useful.

Thanks for the tips, however, I don't agree with 80% promotion and 20% content. While promotion is important, I don't think it deserves 80% of your time. Without good content, promotion means nothing. Content is always king.

Actually, I think soldisnake is referring to posting frequency. Of course, content is king but it is useless if only a few will learn that it came from your blog.

Furthermore, I think that as time goes by you can even reduce your posting frequency and focus on marketing each blog page. After all, we cannot always create equally great content.

But if you optimize the traffic of a few good posts, then this is where we can make good money.

However, it depends on what we want - readers/followers or buyers/ad clickers?

It's a fact that linkbuilding is a HUGE factor in SE rankings. Consequently this advice is extremely pertinent to all people new to marketing.

In fact, I would say that backlinks provide 70-80% of ranking.

In terms of link value you need to try to add your links to related websites. One of the best ways to do this is to comment on other blogs. To find blogs related to your website content you can search at http://blogsearch.google.com or http://webconfs.com/backlink-builder.php

Article submissions are a great way to get backlinks from high PR sites which will in turn increase your own sites PR. Some of the best article sites are http://www.ezinearticles.com http://ideamarketers.com http://goarticles.com etc. I really like ideamarketers because they don't review articles prior to submission, though they will delete articles that breach their terms or have unsuitable content. It's also great that they have free syndication available to other users (though the user must credit the original author). I've created articles with them that have been syndicated over ten times on other sites giving my article (and link) much more exposure

Julia

P.S. Sorry for the number of links in this post but they are all helpful sites

Excellent tips. I started with forums and directory submissions, with a daily smattering of blog commenting. Once I had that down, I then added social bookmarking and social networking. I had to tone down the social networking a bit as it can be a big time suck. Same with forums. Now I have a solid routine down:

Monday: Content writing and blog commenting
Tuesday: Content writing and RSS submissions
Wednesday: Content writing and directory submissions
Thursday: Content writing and social networking
Friday: play
Saturday: play
Sunday: Content writing and forums

In between, I add the other methods. As you can see, I really believe and put a lot of effort into my content, as I believe that is still king.

For faster traffic yes... There's a lot of SB sites today that converted to dofollow from nofollow so the backlink is worth.

Nice thread.

I, myself, have been a SEVERE victim of "analysis paralysis" and I think many (if not most) new internet marketers catch this crippling disease in the first phases of their online presence.

The secret here actually is to continue doing what method you think is applicable to you... People becomes lazy sometimes when they are forcing themselves to do difficult things just to have good result...

You do have a point in that it's much easier to concentrate on one or two tasks at a time. It's very easy to become bewildered and confused when you take too much on.

Having said that, there is one important word of caution when it comes to SEO: You will get best results when your promotions look natural to the search engines. For example, it is not natural to get nothing but blog posts for a month and then it switches to forum posts and then that dies out and you get article backlinks.

In fact, some providers of SEO services offer an option called "humanize" which involves scattering their promotion efforts around in time and space in a natural way.

For this reason, I advise using a variety of methods, even though it's more difficult. For example, a "natural" sequence of events might be an article on several directories followed by a series of related blog and forum posts and social bookmarking of the article. Ideally, these would be scattered rather than appearing as blocks of a defined activity.

Of course, search engines are not (yet) able to completely identify what is natural or not but they are getting better all the time. And if you follow a "natural" method it can actually become easier in time because you're always going with the flow.

I use all of these methods but not at the same time... I always base on my result... I always stick to the one that is effective...

Useful tips, thank you. It is exactly the mistake I have been making by going about my websites promotion in an unorganized form. Because of this I am probably not utilizing the full potential of any of the methods.

Hopefully after reading your post and tips, I should be making amendments to my method and go about this job in a more methodical manner focusing on 1 thing at a time specially in the early stages of a new website promotion.

Great advice - I think my main issue is that I'm overwhelmed by how much there is to do and keep hopping form one thing to another! I need a schedule to follow and this will certainly help.

Good post, and great advice to those who are just starting out. If I had followed this advice when I was new, I would not have gotten burned out right away.

There's a lot of social bookmarking sites so pick only those dofollow SBs... At least you can have backlinks if there is no visitor..

I think this is what we should realize, SB have double purpose but it's only traffic that we are expecting to get.

Different SB have different type of audience.

Here's a good comparison analysis made by Daniel Scocco of Daily Blog Tips.
