Making unique contents for your website, this is the most important thing. Then make your URLs seo friendly. Find better keywords for your website, implement them on your pages make meta descriptions for each and every pages. After done with this you can go for all the off page optimizations.

My Advise is 1st Unique content 2nd i am prefer to Twitter, facebook, Digg, Stumble and Delicious. because in latest google update no value of duplicate content so i am not choose article and blog submission.

On and off page SEO is the key. In doing on page SEO, you should not use hidden links or text, don't use cloaking because it is a black hat technique, and two of the most important aspects of on page SEO is do not ever dare to load your pages with irrelevant keywords and don't create sub-pages or sub-domains with duplicate contents.

In Off page SEO, you can use different methods such as directory submission, article writing and submission, social bookmarking, forum posting, blog commenting etc.

NOTE: Getting good quality backlinks is one of the biggest factor in ranking a website. But consider also the relevancy when you are building backlinks.

I think text on page! Search engines utilize text and only text in providing search results. That text is found in many place including the URL and title of your pages as well as the visible text you place on your website pages.

There's no one most important thing. As others have said unique and fresh content is important, so is optimizing your page for your search terms (read up on onsite SEO).

Backlinks are also important, get diverse and get a lot of them!
