Default On page one on Google… But no visitors???

Hi Everyone.

This is my first post.

I am totally puzzled. I used seoslayer’s WSO “Secret SEO recipe” as a guide to create a site which promotes subliminal Mp3s as an affiliate product.

My main keyword is “Subliminal mp3s”. This gives 340,000 search results. According to the Adwords Keyword Tool this keyword has around 9,000 global monthly searches with medium competition. My thinking was, “OK, that sounds reasonable. Let’s go for it.”

But now I’m thinking there is more to it than simply getting to page one of Google. What am I missing here?

I have read so much about how SEO is important to get good site ranking in the SERPS.

That’s how you get traffic. Right?
No traffic = no sales.

So I’m happy to report that here I am on page one of Google.
Yippee!

I found it surprisingly easy to get to this search result position.

But where’s the traffic.
According to my stats, I am the one and only human visiting my site and clicking the affiliate links

I would really appreciate a little advice here.
This is driving me nuts.

Sal Bonavita

Perhaps you're not high enough on page one. Maybe it just needs more time.

Are you logged in your Google account when checking your ranking?

I checked myself, and his site is definitely on page 1. But it's also below the fold. Not in the top 3 or 5 positions.

The only thing that makes sense is that they're not clicking past the first few results.

One of the best ways to increase your SEO rankings is to regularly add high-quality content. Try to add a new post every day, or maybe 2 new posts every week. Just be consistent. You may want to target long-tail keywords to get some low-hanging fruit traffic from Google.

I am normally logged into my Google account in some form or another, Adsense, Adwords, YouTube or Gmail. I logged out to see if the results were an illusion due to my "logged in status".

I was half hoping that this was the answer and I would be on page ten or something. This is not an inspiring thought but at least it would explain why no visitors. I am still on page one. Position 8 in Australia.

I think this is pretty common, especially in a geo-tarted search term. I have always felt the search volumes are either downright wrong or highly inflated.

You can imagine that every plumber (for example) who is on the first 2 pages of G is probably checking the SERPS 4 times a day... that probably accounts for 2-3K of the volume right there that you're not going to get a click from.

IMO, disappointment is the norm when you reach the first page for many geo-targeted keywords...

First off - Great job on getting to the first page of the SERPs, with over 900,000 competing pages out there. You've obviously applied a lot of what you've been learning.

I agree with the previous response and think you should keep adding more content. You want to move higher in the results; ideally to the #1 spot.

The site that's sitting on top now has over 400 backlinks (at least from what I saw in Yahoo site explorer), while yours only has about 6.

You'll need to keep adding content, in conjunction with building up some backlinks. You can do them manually or outsource someone to do them for you.

I think the combination of some good backlinks, along with more content will get you higher up in the results.

Also, don't forget about the site description. As you see, when you pull up the results page for your keywords, the top two sites offer "Free MP3s" of some sort or the other. These descriptions may be pulling people in, and giving them what they're after - something free - so they don't look down the page any further to find your site.

Try changing your description to entice people to visit your site. If you have anything free, like MP3 downloads. Or have information about how to get some, list that on your description.

Maybe something like "Find out how to download FREE subliminal MP3s, yadda, yadda, yadda..."

And maybe a good press release could generate some additional traffic, and give your site some much-needed backlinks at the same time...

I hope these tips help, and keep focused. You've obviously done a lot right to get your site where it is, now follow through.

Take care,
Steve

Good point. I totally agree this may be the case. I have always had a gut feeling these results can only be relied on as a very rough guide at best. But it's a start.

Hi Sal,

The reason for this is that, when you do keyword research you have to make sure a check the box that says "[Exact] under match types in the left had column of the Google keywords tool.

The exact match for the keyword you chose is 590 per month.

The other factor is that you are ranked 7th, with only gets 0.36% of all clicks

Of course being in the first position you would get 57% of all clicks which is much better.

Right now the top ranked website for this keyword has 14,100 inbound links, so you would need at least that many considering that website has an exact url/keyword match, optimized title tags, and domain age advantage, and tons of content.

Your best bet right now would be to go for the #2 spot which only has 219 inbound links. At the #2 Spot you should see around 13.45% of the search engine traffic.

Also, really start to add content, you can do this by doing interview with people in your niche, getting plr that you can giveaway for people that sign up for your list, and commenting and connecting with the people in your niche. This will really help boost traffic to your site.

Cheers!

I'm not giving up on this. I've never done it before, but it's time I did some outsourcing with regards to backlinks. More content is also in the pipeline, starting today. I also agree with your comments about the site description. I will be changing that too.

I'm going to be busy tomorrow.
Thanks.

Everything you've said makes sense.

To everyone who has replied so far.
I suppose my expectations (and disappointment) were a little premature. But this is my first serious attempt at building a monetized site. I am greatly encouraged by these excellent replies. I am quickly learning (by doing) that the Internet is a shadowy virtual world full of smoke and mirrors.

I don't know this guy at all, but he's A+, 100% correct.

Whenever picking a domain, make sure you're looking at "EXACT" match search volume...that will tell you exactly how many people type in that exact phrase and search, per month.

To see what percentage of your 590 should be clicking through to your site in its current position, see this chart for a good estimate:

http://seo-hacker.com/wp-content/upl...tion-serp1.jpg

I would also add that, above, you mentioned "medium" competition. This doesn't relate to your current problem, but do remember that the bar you're looking at is for AdWords ADVERTISER competition...not SEO competition.

I am having exactly the same problem. I have a site that appears on page one of google for 5 different search terms. The position of these terms vary from position 3 to position 8 and each of the search terms are being used by at least 200,000 people per month according to the research I did. I am however only getting 5-10 visitors per day. Is it really the case that only the sites in position one get any visitors?

Study up the difference between 'broad match' and 'exact match.' Broad match totals tend to be inflated.

Results in 1-3 get a lot more search volume. Look at how Google designed their page. There's not much room for organic search anymore

being on just page 1 doesn't really guarantee traffic. cause personally when i search for stuff on google i rarely check the 4th, 5th....results. if you're on page 1 position 1 or 2 and there was no traffic then that would have been weird. so try getting some GOOD backlinks and find ways to move up the SERPS. all the best man.

Being in page 1 can generate traffic but it depends on the keyword. Some keywords can generate thousands of traffic even if you list on second page but some others don't.

A few thoughts:

Being on page 1 doesn't mean you're guaranteed traffic to your site.
Yes, you are more likely to see traffic results when ranked high, but it's all about content.

If someone is researching "subliminal messages" online, they are looking for a good resource to fill them in on the topic.

My first impression when visiting your site is that it's all about a product and an opt-in.

Being that your site is new, and you have not yet gained a following, my advice is to continue adding content and avoid the spammy backlinks people offer to sell you--don't waste your money on that crap.

Answer questions for people interested in this topic.
Although you're offering this free gift, since you start talking about it right away, my view is that people are dubious at the onset and may just click away after reading the first few lines.

Unfortunately you are the poster child for what I have been trying to tell people for months on end.

FIRST PAGE IS NOT RANKING.

A few people pushing products, WSOs and services have managed to convince people that first page is ranking but ask yourself

How many sites get to first page? TEN

Name me one thing where if you come in tenth you've won? 7th, 8th , 9th - same thing. SEO is like the olympics you only get the big awards (traffic) for the top 3 maybe 4. As others have reported every test has indicated that below 4 you are getting 4% and less.

So lets say you targeted a term with 5,000 searches a month and you are at 8th getting say 3%. That 150 visits PER MONTH or a lousy 5 a day. Why is it lousy because with bounce rates etc you will probably get less than three a day to get any action resulting in a paying action.

Thats not a viable amount of real customers to sustain any successful business model
