Default google keyword tool tells me a keyword has 5,400 exact monthly searches

because google tells me that a keyword has 5,400 exact searches, is this necessarily accurate, or how low down can it be from 5,400 if its not accurate??

I've seen that they are fairly accurate. I'm not sure what the + or - rate of error is, but its the best tool we have for calculating that, as far as I'm concerned!

It is not an accurate number. Exact search numbers are the result of applying an equation to the number of searches for a number of related keywords into one single number and then rounding it off.

As far as trying to figure out how low it is in actuality, all you are doing is guessing.

The numbers are probably best used as a hierarchy. Like keyword one gets 10,000 searches so that is searched for the most. keyword two, only 8100, keyword three, 5400.

Then you can make a plan for how best to use those keywords in your site.

Have you ever known Google to give straight answer? Google is well known to hide the truth in a bunch of gobbledygook gook. Why would you think that the GKT is any different?

As far as how far off is it, no one knows until you do the AdWords test. Some are close, some right on, some way the hell off.

You could look around this forum and find many useful in-depth posts about what keywords are and how you go about optimizing your site for keywords

But in a nutshell keywords are basically a set of words usually 1-4 in length that you try to rank for when someone searches for those words on a search engine like google, yahoo, bing etc. This is important because you would want to capture the traffic searching for those keywords and be able to promote/sell products to them.

For example, if you're selling or promoting a weight loss product, your keyword might be "lose weight now". To be able to rank high on the search result page, various factors play in but in terms of keywords, you want to try to spread it around your posts to about 3-5% density of your total words and also use a lot of related keywords like "fat, exercise, burn" etc. to show the search engines that you are writing something highly relevant to the keywords being searched.

There is a lot of research required to see what people are searching for and the characteristics of websites that are already on the first search page before you choose the right keyword for your own website. I would suggest you do some more research online about what keywords are to get a better idea before you proceed too quickly (and please don't rush to buy random products that guarantee your success!)

It is not 100% accurate, and at the same time if there is PPC adword ads above your #1 ranking... the number of people who actually go to your site will drop even more.

Which tool would be more accurate than GKT in your opinion? I always used it but lately a lot of people have started telling me that it's not very reliable.

Because it's the best tool available. There really aren't many other options.

For keywords search volume, I use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. As far as I am concerned it is accurate for Google searches only. Take note that Google has about 65% of the overall search market share with Bing and Yahoo! combined gaining ground on the global search market.
