I'm kind of new to the whole SEO (started a week ago), but I did a lot of research by watching videos and reading PDF's. Now I have a basic understanding of how it works. While I did some keyword research I found a lot of keywords (also long tail keywords) where the first page of google is dominated by stores like Amazon and Walmart. When using Market Samurai I can see that those sites don't have optimal SEO (url, title, desc,...) and their page backlinks are in most cases below 150. Of course they have massive indexed pages and domain backlinks. My question is : Is it even possible to get onto page 1 like this and what would the timeframe be ? Or is the new google algorithm responsible ? Thank you in advance. |

Yes, it is very possible. Just because an authority site shows up on page 1 doesn't mean that you can't outrank it. Just by making your on site SEO better, you can sometimes out rank sites such as these WITHOUT building a lot of backlinks (like half or even 1/4 of what the #1 spot has). Timeframe varies with every keyword. Sometimes it will take a few days, sometimes a month, sometimes over a year. Generally speaking, the longer the kw is, the quicker you can rank. The shorter it is, the longer it will take to rank. The new algorithm is not responsible for the authority site rankings. They get there because of backlinks that are pointing to the page, their on site SEO, and also because of their internal linking structure. (Amazon has internal pages that are higher in PR that may point to the page that YOU see in the #1 spot). I've outranked Amazon pages and claimed the #1 spot many times, and you can too with the right SEO strategy. Keep reading up on SEO and then test strategies out for yourself....that's the only way to really figure out what works to rank above authority sites like Walmart and Amazon, and what doesn't work.

If I see individual pages (not the home page) of sites like Amazon, Best Buy, WalMart, etc. on page one, that tells me it is probably going to be easy to get a top 10 ranking. Their individual pages are rarely, if ever, optimized for that particular keyword. They are ranking only because of the authority of the main domain. The only exception would be if an individual page is ranking AND it has a lot of backlinks to that page. Usually, like you said, there are few backlinks to the specific page though. |

Thank you very much for your comprehensive answers! I'm feeling more confident about this right now. Some vacation is coming up so I'll have plenty of time to put this knowledge into practice...

Don't let the big names scare you. As someone above said if it is the inside pages of the website you have a GREAT shot! do on page SEO and beat them with that......then begin your back links. Won't be a problem.

Exactly big names don't matter, usually they're just "filler" for the index. If you do the onpage and offpage seo stuff right, you can take over any keyword. Some just take longer then others. Don't let anyone tell you a keyword is not possible, they're full of it. With the right tools and time you can take over virtually any keyword. |
