Was just running a keyword through MS and came across something interesting. I have the exact match .com for this particular niche and the top five sites are all 12 years old...but what I found strange was that 4/5 of them have NO page backlinks (ones to site are in the 10 of thousands which will explain their average PR of 2 and 3). Could I compete with these aged domains with backlinks? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. |

Thanks for the advise! I'll give it a try and see what happens, hopefully some backlink magic should do the trick - anyone else had any experience with this sort of thing?

You can easily outrank aged sites that don't have any backlinks, especially if you're working with an exact match domain.

Thanks guys, just check if my host had resolved the domain and it hadn't , thought it was strange so I checked the domain and I had a mispell in it, the correctly spelt .com is already taken...I could have cried!

Maybe a better strategy would be to go after relevant keywords for which they don't rank well but are targeting. Do some reverse engineering - see which set of keywords they are targeting and go after the weaker ones. Another strategy, get high PR inbound links from relevant pages and get them indexed. You may also need to beef up your content. As far as domain age goes, I can show you a thousand 10 year old sites that are unranked or PR0 for every aged site that ranks in the top ten. So don't let a competing page's age scare you away. Ultimately, everything you do should serve your users (targeted market). Do these competing sites appear to be meeting the real needs of their users? If not, it may be the "weak entry point" you need to get your site ranked above them. Quote:
