Newbie...getting from 5th to 1st???How?

I am very new to IM. Had never even heard of about 7 months ago! I am doing fairly well so far. I am working hard on one site and plan to branch out soon. My blog is bouncing back and fourth between 4th and 5th in google for my main keyword. I am also on page 1 for a few other keywords.

My question is what else can I do to get to number 3??? I leave blog and forum links constantly. I am doing everything by hand, no money to pay anyone. Two of the sites that are ranking in front of mine are popular forums in the niche, will these be really tough to beat out? Thanks for any suggestions!

Just keep adding diversified, high quality backlinks and stay consistent.

What does your competition look like? Consider reverse engineering their site to find out where they get their backlinks from and grab some from their sources, too.

Keep on doing what you've been doing. Whatever you did to get to number 5 will get you to number 3 with enough repetition.

This is a good idea - you can use a free tool called BacklinkWatch.com to see where your competitor's backlinks are from and then go to those pages (or similar ones) and see it you can get a link too.

Thanks everyone. I guess I just need to keep getting links. On the edu links, do they need to be in my niche? I have not had much lock with edu in my niche.

The EDU backlinks don't have to be on your niche. Any edu/gov niche backlinks will do even the NoFollow ones since Googl5 completely trust them compare more than any other TLD domains. I provide manual DoFollow edu backlinks service. Hit me up if you're interested.

Make sure you can get to #1 before you put a lot of effort into just building poor quality links. It depends on your keyword but say if the search term is for a trademark then it will be difficult to beat the owner of that trademark.

Have a good hard look at the 4 sites above you and see what's required.
