Default Delayed ranking power of a new site – Is this true?

I have a website which is just over one month old & it doesn’t seem to want to move from the bottom of page one.

The competition is not too strong for the keyword phrase I’m targeting.

I’ve got Amazon in the #1 spot with 3 back links & another few large online retailers at the top that also only have a hand full of back links.

My sites on page SEO is better than any other site on page 1 & also I have some very strong back links.
The only thing I can think of that is holding my site back is the age of my site because looking at Amazons page & back links I should be out ranking them without a problem.

Do you think the delayed ranking of a new website is true?

Those authority sites don't rank because of backlinks. They rank
by sheer authority. Your site is doing just fine, actually.
You probably outrank them for some longer tail or other
unique searches. What can you do? The same stuff you
are doing now, but go for much stronger(and more) content and
higher quality backlinks. Google already knows about you.
Give them some reasons to move you up. However, the
sad part is, you may never outrank them for the exact
word you are trying for.

Hi BarryOnline,

First and foremost, you need to understand that search engines don't rank websites, they index and rank individual web pages. Stop thinking of ranking your website and think of ranking your individual web pages, don't think of your competition as a website but instead as individual web pages.

Well great then, it should be even easier to beat those competing web pages as opposed to competing high "authority" websites, right?

Think again, pages have authority and the authority comes from the backlinks that link to that page. As webmasters working on our SEO campaigns we often think of backlinks as links from external websites and forget to include backlinks from within the same website as part of our backlink analysis. You see it doesn't matter if a backlink is from within the same domain or from external domains, it counts the same.

Ask yourself "how does my internal link structure compare to my competitors?" That is a key consideration that is often overlooked.

Now to your specific question: "Do you think the delayed ranking of a new website is true?"

Of a new website? No. Of a new web page? Yes.

The major search engines all include a set of ranking signals that are generally referred to as "Trust" factors. Yahoo calls it TrustRank, Google calls it page reputation and I have no idea what Bing calls it. An essential element of trust is the reputation that is earned over time. It requires the passage of time to earn trust.

With Google, Trust can also be passed from backlinks just as PageRank value is passed. Pages with high Trust scores will pass some of that trust to pages they link to, but the amount of trust it passes is in direct proportion the amount of time it has existed.

Think of it like this, if webpages were people, who would you trust more: Someone you just met today, or someone you have known for years, given neither person has ever given you a reason to distrust them? And who would you trust more, a person referred by someone you just met or a person referred by someone you have known and trusted for years?

So how do you get your new web page to rank as well, or better than the competing pages, those with backlinks from internal pages that have long time established trust? The solution is simple, just not always easy. By getting powerful links from pages that have stood the test of time. Remember, those backlinks can be from any website on the Internet. The fact that your website is new need not prevent you from earning trust by getting links from other long established and trusted pages.
