My niche site ranks #1 on Google.com local and #3 on Google.com for US location. My CTR is 4.71% and I only have one adsense box above each article.

I would try wrapping the text around your unit, and add another at the bottom of the article, or use a 728x90 at the top and the square at the bottom. Test it out to see how that works, also play around with the colours of your ad. You shouldn't lose ranking for changing the theme |

Your CTR is low because you most likely don't have relevant ads being displayed on your page. Read the ad links that show up in your adsense unit and see if they have anything to do with your site's content. That's usually a major reason for lack of clicks.

Hi liovvoil, Switching themes can sometimes effect rankings. It all depends on how different those themes are and how they are configured. Themes are often based on a common framework. If you switch to a theme that uses the same basic framework you should be fine, provided you configure it with the same components. However, usually you don't need to switch themes to change your ad layout. Most themes allow you to modify the template files and position your pages elements wherever you want them. That would be the safest way to change your ad layout without risking your current rankings. |

holy cow. If your CTR is over 4% - for myself, I consider that pretty good. Of course, most of my sites are informational websites...

Have you tried using something like HubPages and Squidoo to learn from how they position there ads? They test the positioning for maximum CTR. Might be able to learn a thing from people who spend all day testing these things... ;-) |
