I have had it for 4 years now on most of my sites and I have seen no negative affect

It could be Google has a biased agenda against other advertising networks and thus lowers any pages ranking with those competing advertising networks on them. I have no experience with this but I could imagine why Google would do something sneaky like that... |

Me too, but it would fall foul of anti-competition laws in some countries.
