Default Does Google penalize you for posting other peoples' articles if you credit and link?

Like if I post an article from another blog on my site, in part or in whole, with a link back to the original article, will Google ding me for dupe content and bury me in search results?

Before the Panda update, I would've said absolutely not. But it seems as if google is now frowning upon copying other peoples content.

Also, technically what you're referring to is syndicating content. "duplicate content" means that you have the same content multiple times on the SAME site.

Syndicated content means you're reposing another sites content on a different site.

Hi,

I have a domain with a couple of niche articles written by myself. I added
pages as required in Web Standard Best Practices such as Privacy Policy,
TOS, About and Contact Us.

On top of that, I placed videos as well as CB, CPA offers and Adsense
in my pages. For backlinks, I used only 3 articles directories, 2 x Web2.0,
6 videos in Youtube and a link from 1 FB Fanpage as well as RSS syndication.

My site got No.1 spot in Google for 4 months for the niche against so many
aged and active competitors. ...... lovely.

Then I added some articles from Directories with their resource box intact.
The site continue to be at No.1 spot for another 3 months.

Then, it dropped to No.41 in Google, but remained No.1 in Yahoo and Bing.

The sole reason for this drop in Google is I didn't update my site. In
the background, competitors were updating theirs. Now after updating,
the SERP rank is climbing back in Google to No.31. Should be climbing
further soon in Google.

Right now, I'm working with 3 Guest Bloggers for the site, just to see
what happens.

What I'm suggesting is:
1. Have your own articles first and get it crawled and indexed
2. Do simple FREE backlinks.
3. Then add Articles from Directories to enrich content
4. Update at least 1 time a week with your own articles.
5. Syndicate your original content to RSS

Hope this helps a bit.

I think it depends on how much articles you get from article directory..If your content's site mostly from article directory I think your site will not rank well although you give credit link to source article..Just my opinion..

Hi luxifia,

There is no duplicate content penalty, it's just a myth. However, you could be dinged for copyright violations. Copying content without permission could get your pages de-indexed, or even lead to legal claims.

The bottom line: Get permission, or limit it to reasonable use, no more than 4 or 5 sentences with a link to the source.

@co2,

Your definition of syndicated content is a bit off. The owner of the content is the syndicator, not the publisher. To syndicate is to sell, or grant, permission to publish. It's not syndication if your using content without permission, that's just stealing.

@azmanar,

What your post refers to is what I like to call riding the QDF wave. It is a common strategy for bloggers. The QDF feature of Google Search will temporarily boost fresh content so users can more easily find late breaking information. It is a good strategy for bloggers, however I wouldn't ignore normal SEO for your permalinks, that would just be wasting content.

Hi Dburk,

Thanks for the SEO advice on permalinks.

Indeed that is an important part of SEO, just like Page Title is.

And your highlight about Google's QDF ( Query Deserves Freshness ) algo
is no mystery, as you pointed out. The problem is I'm not disciplined enough
to update my sites in maintaining its rank.

That's an issue that many failed to see for getting ranks for blogs.

But for many IM'ers it is not an issue because their blogs and sites are
merely for back-linking purposes to their more lucrative landing pages.

Really appreciate your points.

Thanks

EXACTLY! People get so worried about duplicate content even though they have no idea what google's stance actually is on it. People just "know" it's bad because everyone says it is.

Ezinearticles built their business on syndicating the articles, news sites syndicate articles all the time. Panda put a hit on content farms, but not because of duplicate content, because of the low quality of content.

If you have a website try to keep it unique, but you can get away with a few articles syndicated on your site.
