Spam links to a company

Hi,

I am doing some link research for a company in majesticseo. I now see alot of spammy keyword links to that company blog. Keywords like viagra, buy cialis etc..

As they are all linked to the blog I wonder if there is something going on with some strange black hat seo or just a matter of a competitor that want to blacklist that company with some reverse seo.

What is your expert opinion on what is going on?

Could be someone trying to get them a penalty that doesn't know what they are doing.

IMO the "penalty" is that the site ranks well due to the backlinks, then google recognizes the spam links and de-values them thus making it look like a "penalty"

So you think that you can not really get a 'penalty' for this links? Just that those links just does not rank right?

But could there be anything else than that someone is trying to punish the site?

It might be done due to getting higher traffic. If something works for a company and bring it traffic, then it might also be good for another companies.
