Rank for Duplicate Content on Sub-Domains?

I am putting up numerous WP sites. Each is intended to rank for say "blue widgets Chicago", "blue widgets Los Angeles", "blue widgets Dallas" and so on.

So, I'd have chicago.bluewidgets.com and losangeles.bluewidgets.com, and so on.

It will be 99% duplicate content (except for city name) on each sub-domain.

I know I can rank these on separate domains pretty well, but will Google see that as duplicate content and only rank one sub-domain if I create the sites on separate sub-domains as opposed to separate domains?
