Is this normal? I have checked my analytics and they are not bots, most of thetraffic are genuine clickthroughs from a backlink, the rest re from google as search results for various terms. The ads are in a column down the left hand side, they were previously down bothe the right and left hand side and along the top but I removed some because it looked too many. Can anyone give me any tips on how to improve this - it is a 0.07% click through rate! |

It would help If we knew the reason your page had 2,930 traffic hits from that single backlink. Did the traffic follow your backlink because of content you have on your page (video, downloadable file, article, etc...) Whatever the reason, you need to have Adsense someplace around that content on your page. |

Are the ads above the fold? I've had clickthrough rates this bad on one of my sites.

Put a single large rectangle above the fold. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Some kinds of traffic are just not that inclined to click on ads. If your keyword has a low commercial intent, that may be the reason. You have not given enough information for anyone to give you a decent answer, and it could be due to dozens or hundreds of things. Are the ads focused on your content or is AdSense just spilling crap they have left over on your site. |

I had a very similar thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago. I did a forum post that brought in 4500 visitors over 2 days to my sites and all I had was 2 adsense clicks. I thought it was a mistake too, but if you have experimented with different placement and color of the ads, tried a mix of adsense and other affiliate ads, you may just not have good "clickable" traffic. My suggestion is to try a different niche. I'm no expert in this field by any means, but I always learn a lot by running champion/challenger comparisons... on everything. |

| depends on the niche - my computer niche gets under 1% CTR some other sites with the same ad placement get over 20% You should change your ad placement as well, large square in line with text and the 728x90 works the best |

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I will implement a few of these and see if it makes any difference - I can change the background color quite easily. WRT the clicks coming from the backlink, it is a sitewide link that I paid for in a non-relevant niche, I didn't really expect to get any clickthroughs, just wanted the backlink but people seem to be clicking through on it. The main keyword for the site is "How to XXXX" So I would expect that someone coming there is looking for information on how to do something and may be prepared to pay for that. Perhaps I have to start pre-selling them on the products that appear in the ads. The ads all seeem to have relevant poducts - courses in how to do what they are searching for. It's really got me stumped. |
