One SEO guru tells me to link to Wikipedia using the keyword phrase with "rel=nofollow" in order to preserve link juice. The other SEO guru tells me not do this and leave it as a regular link.

I don't think it really matters if you make it nofollow or not. I don't usually take the time to make it no follow. But that is because I forget or am lazy. I see no real benefit to me either way. Wikipedia will benefit if you don't make it nofollow, but they will not even notice it due to the thousands of links they already have. No one else cares as I can see it. I know Google doesn't really car and will crawl it one way or another. |

There is no relation between Google and Wiki... so why would they be punishing you?

Certainly no punishment. But one-way links to outside of your site will affect your page-rank ( please note that site-rank and page-rank are two different terms). This is not huge and you can ignore it if you limit the usage. |

I don't think you would get pusnished by Google for having nofollow links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia itself uses nofollow external links. |

Hi Keep, The second "guru" is correct. The first "guru" is a fake guru, the "rel=nofollow" does not preserve link juice. I wouldn't trust anything that you hear from this phoney "guru".

More to the point, you're going to get punished by wikipedia moderating patrols. Don't expect your link to stay there for long.

I think you may have misread the OP. This thread is about linking to Wikipedia from your own website. Wikipedia's moderators do not patrol the links placed on other websites, just because the linked to Wikipedia, and even if they did, they have no power to remove links on your website.

I know this is off topic, just wanted to say I have 50+ backlinks on wikipedia that date back to Jan. 2011. Still think backlinks don't stick on wiki? If you know what your doing they will stick without any Mods. deleting them, you just have to provide something wiki needs.

I like to link to Wiki in my blogs, and other authority sites for that matter. I have found this helps with on page SEO. It just gives your site a little more credibility. Jonathan |
