Hello, I wonder if I should use the nofollow tag on my affiliate links? I've heard that Google isn't very fond of affiliate links, so it might help to add the nofollow tag to get higher ranking? Appreciate your advice. Kanute |

Put rel="nofollow" in the anchor tag.

It's always best to use the nofollow tag for affiliate links. Even if Google still crawls and detects a nofollowed affiliate links, you still want to avoid sending link juice to your target page and possibly ranking it above you.

There is no reason to use a nofollow tag. That's not what the tag is for. That attribute does not in any way, shape, or form, mean that google will not see it. It's for spam and links that you may not trust. What does that say about you and your site? That you will put links on your site that you think are spam or not trusted? Makes no sense. If you think affiliates are so bad to google, then get out of the affiliate business or don't rely on google. Either way, nofollow is irrelevant. FYI: order of attributes does not matter. Paul |

| That's not how you gain PR though. Sure nofollow your aff links, but you do need some do follows. Think of PR like a high school social life. A do follow link is a friend. A no follow link is a friend that no one knows about. If you have a bunch of no follow links in high school, then everyone will think you're a loser and you will be treated as one. However if you have do follow links that everyone can see, you will be put to the top. Hope it makes sense. To answer your question, you need a mixture. |

Thanks for the answers folks! Still, I'm not quite sure if I should use the nofollow or not, as some of you say no and some say yes. Maybe I should use it on a few of the affiliate links... |

Thank you for the tip (and link)! Here is question and answer on this issue: "Eric Enge: If Googlebot sees an affiliate link out there, does it treat that link as an endorsement or an ad? Matt Cutts: Typically, we want to handle those sorts of links appropriately. A lot of the time, that means that the link is essentially driving people for money, so we usually would not count those as an endorsement." In my understanding, this means that Google sees affiliate links as just that, not as an endorsement - at least "a lot of the time". So there should be no need to put a nofollow tag on affiliate links; those links won't harm your site. |
