Default will this work? buy old domain and 301 re-direct

Hi,

if you bought an old domain and did a 301 re-direct to a domain that was more keyword dense, would this have combined serps benefits? or not?

thanks,
Riddley

Maybe if the people where typing in the exact old domain and then being redirected to your other one it would be of benefit. Otherwise I think it wouldn't acts as a major backlink point in googles eyes.

Hi Gaz ,
I'm looking at buying a 10 year old domain and then developing it - the domain age will give it more authority and the new website name (the one it is re-directed to ) will be more relevant to the most popular search term in my niche

it work for now, but in case in future if the domain gets change then it will harm your website. so i suggest you don't go to fool search engine.

If the domain that you are redirecting has good backlinks and already ranks for certain keywords , providing that your website is of the same niche as the old domain then it will help yes, Your site should acquire those ranks which the old domain had before you redirected it, It could over time slide but thats why you should be building for the new keywords that you have acquired to your new domain to help keep the strength.

Domain age has nothing to do with authority.

An old domain that has been de-indexed is pretty useless.

You are mixing up 301 redirect with rankings. It won't help
with ranking the website that it is being redirected to.

In fact, you even claim it will be re-directed to a more "keyword"
rich domain. If that really mattered, then logic would hold that
you are trying to build hope based on an inferior domain.

Either way, it's illogical, but keeps domain re-sellers rich.

Hello:

Yeah... the only benefit you may get from this is if the old domain already has some links pointing to it. You may get a little traffic that way.

And... make sure you do not buy a domain that may have gotten on google's bad side for some reason or another like black hat techniques, etc. If it is currently indexed, you should be OK.

It's probably a better idea to buy the domain, slap some content up on the site and do your on-page optimization and then just link to your main site. That way you'll get more search traffic and some inbound links.
