Backlink Plan Help

How much is too much for a brand new site? Should I start off slow with perhaps only 3 new backlinks on the first day, then 7 on the 2nd and keep at 4-7 new backlinks for the first week?

I want to stay steady but not too steady as that looks unnatural also. Also should I be worried about the diversity of where the backlinks come from? Should I try to include article directories, social sites, forums and blogs?

Also should I build backlinks to each page of my site or build more to the main domain name?

Here's what I do...

1) Don't worry so much about the number of links so long as you can *consistently* get a similar number of links per day.

I've had brand new sites that have been able to get hundreds of links in the first week and still stay at the top.

2) Definitely try to diversify your links e.g. articles, blogs, rss aggregators, video sites etc etc ... this will do wonders to help your linking look natural.

By not putting 'all your eggs in one basket' you are giving yourself some security e.g. if one day Google decided blog links were worthless, if all you had were links from blogs then you'd be in trouble.

It may be unlikely. but at least by diversifying you're covering yourself for such an event.

3) Build backlinks to your homepage AND your inner pages.

Typically what I do is create a blog post, then create a similar article with two links - one anchor text link to the blog post, then a regular 'http://' type link going to the homepage.

Usually my domain names would be keyword rich anyway, so even a link to the homepage still would contain anchor text of sorts.

coreytucker, even dozens of one way backlinks on day 1 is not a tragedy. But, of course, don't be greedy.
