Default Domain names, how long is too long?

Lets say that your tageting a very long tailed keyword, just as a random example lets say I was targeting "How To Run Five Miles In Under Less Than Five Minutes".

Would howtorunfivemilesinunderlessthanfiveminutes.com rank well for that keyword or is it just too long?

How about related keywords like "running fast"?

two to 3 keyword long is good, don't put too much weight on the domain name, pass it to some other concept of onpage optimization.

So you think Google would knock you down the rankings for this? I'm asking because my keyword is localized, so I have the name and the county in the keyword in addition to the niche. Ex:BayAreaSpeedRunners.com

I think google still give high ranking for the rich keywords domain names, but if the domain is too long.. it will mess the navigation bar.. Just my opinion..

Better put the important keywords in the site description and search max 3 keywords for a good domain name ;-)

5miles5minutes.com is okay for the keyword you mention. Domain must be under 4 words. If you buy very long domain name then it won't get rank too much .. Its clearly looks spammy website

Search engines know Five=5

Runing fast keyword is not essential. Forget about it . When you do linkbuilding for your website then only USE running fast keyword (as anchor text)

Your example is too long.. and kinda spammy.

Hard to remember for type-in traffic and I remember Matt Cutts saying that long domain names with multiple hypens can be too spammy.

The issue is not one of ranking. Domain name has much less ranking weight than people think. Rather, it's one of people remembering the name. I would try to limit to 3 words, 4 max depending on circumstances. For example, aryangarg's suggestion of 5miles5minutes.com which is great in my opinion, even if it has four words, because it includes numbers and sorts of breaks the words up and make it easier to read and remember.

If memory is right, the maximum allowed number of characters in a domain is 63, including the TLD. But again, you don't want to go that high. I'd try to limit it to 25 characters or less. Also, think about marketing, especially PPC. The character limit to display your domain in ads is 35 characters for most services.

you can use Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) like .co.uk, .us, .de and .ru
