Default First attempt at SEO plan... what do you think?

Hey everyone,
I have been a long time avid reader of this forum, but this is the first time i've jumped in and am actually saying hi!

Basically I run a small web publishing company (and I want it to be much much bigger... as do we all).

I am allocating 1/2 a day a week of my time and some funds for outsourcing to be dedicated to SEO, but I wanted to make sure what I was doing was on the right track so I didn't waste the time or money (neither of which I have a heap of... particularly the time part!!)

Ok, enough rambling, here is my plan. Please feel free to tear it apart, and any suggestions would be great.

Part One (this is already under way).

1 x (rather expensive) linkwheel for two pretty competitive keywords - directed to my homepage. On page SEO has been done specifically for these two keywords. I researched the company a lot and they seem good, so fingers crossed!

+ Ongoing monthly backlink building through outsourced co aimed at 10 less competitive words, lesser extent on page SEO done for these (ran out of room to fit them in really... wondering if this is now a waste of money??)

Part two (weekly)
The site has many categories, and features many brands, so I am going to focus on 2-3 pages or posts per week (existing ones, and writing ones just for keywords) and make sure onpage SEO is fab for 2-3 good keywords for each page.

Using wordtracker to find keywords.

1 x Press release written per week, distributing to local media and submitting to online press release submission services (which are the best ones)

Part two (monthly)
Monitor the results of On page SEO, pick 1-2 working best and pay for either link wheel, link pyramid or just link push to that page for those terms. Alternate these paid methods so google doesn't get suss.

Part three - every 3 months ish?
redo large link wheel for homepage to keep up rankings (if first one successful). Not sure if this is a good idea... ??

And that's my rough plan... what do you think? Love to hear about others experiences. Thanks in advance.

All fine, but I would concentrate much more on giving out valuable information (have 2 freebies: one directly downloadable on the landing page and so good they'll want to give you an email address after consuming it, and one to snag the email address) and keyword-optimized press releases. For the freebies, you can get some fresh, stupid good PLR right on this forum if you're not inclined to create your own.

Hi Tom,

The freebies are a bit harder for me, as I actually run a fashion editorial site.. but I will have a think if there is anything special I can come up with to use.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think this is a great start. As you go along you can refine your plan as you start to see results coming in or not coming in. Just make sure your plan is flexible for change and you will do great. You have a good plan in place......now get going!

Hi

It looks like a good plan you have been going there. But there are a few thing I will ad to it.

You mention those 10 keywords as been less competitive, just make sure they are still "money" keyword, that can make the visitor perform the desired action. Many times we see marketers go for easy keywords that have not value in them.

Next if it is a relatively new site, should be prepared for a bumpy ride where your keyword will dance up and down the rankings, which means you can have a page one ranking one day and the next the same keyword will be down to page 60.

Just make sure you stick to the plan and do not panic.

In regards to freebies, how about a fashion report or a bid on next years fashion, you can create something yourself.

Good Luck

That's a great plan and it looks like you've got a review process built into it. Far too often new SEO's tend to focus on optimizing a million pages but never take time to analyze their analytics.

The goal should be to find 8-10 top performing keywords and optimize the hell out of them to get them even higher in the SERPs. As you begin to move those pages to the top of the search results, reanalyze things and see if you can't find some 'sub-keywords' based on those that you can build additional pages/content around for additional rankings.

Its all about building links, solid on-site optimization and then review and tweak based on whats working for your site.
