Default Ok jokes aside - anyone here had any luck getting backlinks from actual Webmasters?

As the title reads....

Has anyone here had any luck getting backlinks from actual Webmasters by sending emails and just "asking" them?

I know this might seem a bit odd, given the general nature of gaining forced backlinks, but Im interested....

How many, if any, have had success with sending actual emails and asking for anchor text rich links on homepages of high PR sites?

Anyone???

What I do is send an inquiry about accepting articles relevant to their visitors, which would include a resource box with my link. Many of them are hungry for consistent content. I've been averaging 4-5 a day for 14 years.

You mean as opposed to imitation webmasters, or virtual webmasters, or something?

Damn ... there's always a catch.

Yes, I've had loads of backlinks from relevant blogs in my niche ... but not by sending emails just asking for a backlink and offering nothing (because many people would want that as part of a "reciprocal linking" and that would take the value away, so it doesn't interest me at all).

I've had all mine either from blog comments that have been accepted or by offering "content for backlinks" (article syndication - I have huge numbers of these: it's the bulk of my off-page SEO).

In these circumstances, I don't look at or ask about page ranks because they're not very relevant to me: context-relevance is what I care about, because I like to try to look at these things the same way Google does ...

Thanks MYOB. So basically you're saying that you offer to "guest post" for the site owner, and in return for your submission, you include a resource box containing an anchor text rich backlink?

Yes. Those people that actually build websites The imitation ones are the ones that most of us seem to talk about around here.

Understood and agree.

Contextual backlinks. Yes Im aware of the power of contextual backlinks as opposed to sidebar/footer type links.

Thanks Alexa. All valid strategies.

Exactly what Alexa said, but in far less as many words.

One thing I would add, this is not merely "guest posting". Almost all of these sites will accept regularly submitted articles on a weekly basis which are syndicated to a network now approaching 30,000 website owners and bloggers. It drives not just backlinks, but also some very heavy duty targeted traffic.

In some markets I have had some success by offering unique content to one webmaster at first and then using that successful publication as social proof to others.

I have had some success this way. And met a lot of nice folks.

If I ask for link then I have to give them links from some of other sites which we decide. Never tried to get back links the way you mentioned for free. Got few links from sites of my friends on asking but not strangers.
