Default What % of the SEO job is writing content?

I'm an SEO consultant and not much of a writer. I know people hire writers for ad copy, content creation, blogging, and SEO but as a consultant, I'm curious as to how much of my time I should spend on writing. How important is writing for an SEO consultant?

Hmmm...

If you are a SEO consultant then your profession is to consult and not to write ) So logically it has to be about 5% for writing emails

Jokes aside, personally writing is a key component to my SEO pursuits. While many linkbuilding campaigns can be automated, decent content is something that couldn't be unless you outsourced them.

I never trust anyone to write articles for on my own sites, partly because I can write my own and great content is just too expensive. But for article campaigns and 2.0s I do hire people to do that for me.

To answer your question, writing (and spinning) is about 50% of my SEO pursuits. Why? Because it is of my belief that the right content does save me a lot of work for offpage link building + gaining visitors trusts (potential recurring sales and higher conversion rates).

Thanks Haruka, I share your enthusiasm for high quality content. I wouldn't trust someone else writing my own own site either. However, because I am consulting for a client, I am writing for her site, not mine! She has 20 years experience in her field and I am kind of left hanging on how to approach the content creation process to bring more traffic to her site.

Are you a consultant? And do you find yourself writing content for clients that you personally have no interest or expertise in?

LOL that's exactly why I wouldn't write for my clients...! I do work for a SEO company part time that provides services to clients. I wouldn't write for my clients because I always felt things I wrote are beautiful and unique in my own eyes and I probably couldn't reflect that when I'm writing for something that I have no interests and experience in... So writers like yourself are very respectable in my opinion!

Writing about a topic of which you know little can be difficult. Unless you explicitly stated that you'd be writing content, feel free to outsource it (if it's okay with the client) or ask the client for some content.

I'm just waiting for the next reply to say "Well, writing content is important so you should learn to be a better writer, learn the industry, and write for you client."

I'm under the impression that that's what many SEO consultants do.

Writing press releases and marketable content with a call to action is one thing. Writing for article directories is another.

I think that most of the job is writing content. Once you have your on page optimization done, then you need to focus in on the content that you are trying to develop. By developing great content, you will build links naturally, and drive traffic to your site. With that being the train of thought, I would say that it varies depending on what stage you are at in the entire process.

I'm probably at stage 1 as a consultant. Ha, I keep going back to the fact that I am a consultant and this is not MY content but content for my client. Therefore my interest and expertise in the subject matter is very limited.

I'm trying to develop a strategy where we can streamline the whole process of creating content in these areas: Press Releases (when we release a new product), Informative Public Relations guides (to educate buyers), Blogger/Article Submission (for unique insights in our industry), and On-page SEO (the content on our website).

If you were to rank these in terms of importance for generating additional traffic to your already well ranked website, where would you start?

personally for me and for my seo clients it is about 5%, because everything else is analysing it, consulting with clients, providing reports etc.

Though if I was just doing seo for my own sites content writing would be about 25%.
