Hi Esther. Here is the simplest, most basic way to perform keyword research. 1) Make a giant list of every possible phrase a potential customer would use in search of your website. 2) Group this giant list of phrases into many small lists so that the keywords in each list are all related to one another. 3) Answer 3 questions for each keyword 1 by 1. How many people are searching for this keyword? -use the adwords tool to find search volume How many other pages are competing for this keyword? -use intitle:"keyword" AND inanchor:"keyword" in Google -record the total number of results returned What is the likelihood someone is interested in buying when they search using this phrase? -take an educated guess on a scale of 1-10 4)This now gives you a giant list of phrases with search volume, competition & buyer intent. Pick out the keywords with the most search volume, least competition & most buyer intent. 5) Optimize your website using this list. |

LSI is a fancy way of explaining this situation: If your page is about superman, it should contain related phrases like "kryptonite", "clark kent", "lois lane". I try to not get caught up in all these fancy acronyms and concepts. Any algorithm, no matter how complex is designed to solve a fundamental problem. |

^ true.. stick to the keyword relevancy of your website.. plus check the competition and monthly searches.. and if you are Geo Targeting try to include the local Search for your chosen KW's.

Keyword tools are great, and I use quite a few when compiling a good list to start with. But there are a lot of other ways to pull good keywords together that give you a great scope to start out with. Check out: 1. Amazon books on your subject - find books on your broad subject and check out the TOC and index. Great source of possible keywords. 2. Resource books like the dictionary and thesaurus. 3. Sites like Wikipedia - lots to mine there 4. SpyFu - even the basic stuff is helpful 5. Places where your target audience hangs out - forums on topic, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Bookmarking sites, article sites. 6. Google Sets, Google Trends, WonderWheel The Google Keyword Tool can get you started, but to get the best related keywords, you want to branch out. Then you can start grouping these keywords into topics to add content to your site, build links, etc. BAcheson makes a good point about "buyer keywords" and questions to ask yourself. You want a nice mix of keywords, but buyer keywords are the gold standard. Good luck on your keywords and site! Susan |

Look into Keyword Sniper Pro. If I had it when I started, I think I'd be much further ahead than I am now. It basically does everything for you in terms of finding good keywords.

But always remember, folks, - that thing between your ears and some common sense really does help when brainstorming (haha) keyword lists. Susan | |
