Default Noob Question - Rss How To Use it

I have had wordpress for a long time but I have never looked at RSS, however when researching seo methods I noticed the use of RSS in almost every success modern day seo success.

From what I understand RSS, is basicly a summery of all the posts made on your blog, im assuming wordpress has this built into it automaticly or do I have to change a setting.

Then once you have your RSS you can submit it to Rss feeds? Im just abit confused not using it before.

When you put into google what is rss bla bla it explains what it is but how do I use it to benifit my site?

You're right.. it's a summary of your posts. It allows a visitor to grab your rss feed url and save it to a lot of different rss programs. In this way, they go to their rss program and they can visit the summary posts of all of their favorite blogs all at once, without having to visit every site. So.. make those summary rss feeds count and make people want to click those summary posts to visit your site.

Your site's RSS feed is

http://yourdomain.com/feed

Take that address URL and submit it to about a dozen RSS directories

feedagg
postrank
blogdigger
goldenfeed
icerocket
feedgy
feedplex
metafeeder
edufeeds
medifeeds
finfeeds

Feedburner is the big dog in this space. You publish your feed for other people to use. The benefit to them is a fresh stream of new content to read or populate their sites. The benefit to you is your content, hopefully with a link (use a rss footer link plugin) back to your site, gets spread far and wide.

There are dozens of rss directories like feedburner that allow you to publish your feed. It's a pretty common seo tactic these days with jobs on fiverr.com that will get you spread pretty wide with no effort on your part.

Also, most of the quality back linking services include rss syndication of some type so if you've employed any such services your feed is probably already out there.

Hope this helps.
