Default some "SEO experts" I hired put ++duplicate content - what to do?

Hi, I hired a whole bunch of SEO people using oDESK as I read a lot about that here in this forum and some of them created link wheels just copy pasting my articles to blogs and linking back to my website. Others copy pasted my articles with very minor editing (5-10%) and submitted them to directories.

Isn't this completely wrong and duplicate content spam which will hurt me?

What can I do? Am I doomed to be penalized by Google? Can then anyone do this to their competitors and "kill them"?

Thanks for your advice.

Link wheels used to be all the rage not too long ago. But with Google's big update Panda, there's been a huge crackdown on duplicate content use, I don't think link wheels provide the same SEO value they once did. Google wants quality content & have made huge strides to devalue duplicate content abuse.

It's not a matter of penalizing you (or your competition) more so just not assessing any SEO value from the link wheel.

I know how frustrating that can be. But you shouldn't be penalized by Google. If you link out from your site to an undesirable site then you would have a problem.

If you think this might be a problem, then focus on getting yourself non-duplicate content links to minimize the appearance of what these 'experts' did.

Firstly, you should state that in your job description. If you didn't, then I suggest that you cancel all their contracts now. Rehire other SEO experts and state that you want original articles only.

It's probably not a good thing to let anyone untested have control of your SEO, or anything else relating to your business. Go for the cheap guys and you will end up being known as a spammer, because that is how they will do their job...

I would suggest creating your own SEO task schedule, then hire people to do the leg work for you, under your management.

so Google will not penalize me at all for having duplicate content?

>> jerytohn
I did not know that I should specify to people who are SEO experts about duplicate content...

>> KenDurham
I wanted to learn from "SEO experts", but seems they are not really experts.

------
so will Google penalize me?
what can I do? Just ignore and build other links like kindvater said?

nah dont worry about it. If you are uncomfortable with it, just ask them to change it, or you probably have access to those properties, just put some better content. Let it age, come back next time, add more content. Send it links, make it relevant. You shouldnt lose any sleep from it

It's not really a big deal, more of a personal preference thing.

You can start a new project with original content. The current project can run its course for you to determine if there is actually a penalty or not.

Ouchhh, yes from my understanding this will hurt your results rather than improve them.
I use copyscape to check for this stuff and basically Google doesn't like your articles flying all over the interwebs.. I would try to revise those articles personally and just pull them apart in Word and use a whole bunch of synonyms to avoid you showing up...

It won't kill you, just hurt you.

John

Duplicate content penalty is a myth. The penalty comes when you have duplicate content for a given page. Your page ranks below the page that posted the content first no matter what.

Your web site cannot be "penalized" for having duplicate pages posted around the internet. This would mean that your competitors could copy your pages and you would penalized...that doesn't make any sense.

If you're worried about being penalized by Google or the sort, then you can rest easy knowing that you won't be.

In this scenario, what you may have lost is just time and money. But you can totally rectify the situation and make it better.

First thing you can do is fire their @$$ and hire someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Good luck to you!
