Link Location

I have always been told to link to the appropriate category pages on my ecommerce sites.

I am in several niches and my stores generally make money, hoever most of the 'dominant' stores in my niche stack links to their home page.

Although I have been careful about link anchor text and quality etc but would i be better served just having my home page being on steroids and using site structure to flow downhill instead of building individual category pages?
