How many keywords do you target at once?

Hey everyone, I was just wondering I am a fairly new site, and I was wondering how many keywords do you target all at once? Do you concentrate on one or two until they rank well, or do you do a bunch at a time?

Really depends on that particular campaign, but I rarely target less than 10 at a time.

If I find a good keyword that is going to bring 5-10 thousand visitors a month by itself, I might consider targeting less.

What I tend to do is go after a general, though still targeted, phrase and use it as my domain. This is tricky because there's a fine line between being too broad and not broad enough. If you go too broad you'll have a hard time ranking. But if you don't go broad enough you won't get enough searches.

Once I've ranked the site I'll start to target longer tail keywords. After some time you'll also start seeing traffic for terms you never even considered when creating your content. Do some research and you'll probably find a few that are getting a decent amount of searches. You can then go after these as well.

Most of my sites look like this:

nichekeywords.com/longtailkeywords

ex: dogcollars.com/xyzdogcollarreview (Totally random example. I don't own that domain.)

You usually want to do 2-3 main keywords per page.

I would suggest focusing on those few for your main page, but maybe adding a few sub-pages with keyword optimized content to rank as well. This way you can focus link building on your home page, but also have a few sub-pages getting links as well.

Setup proper internal linking, and all the pages should rise together.

This is easy to ask but difficult to answer, other than it depends upon many factors such as:

the search market
the client's priorities
the website content
the level of SEO required.

I prefer targeting long tail keywords. These can be 3 to 4 per site and ofcourse are easy to rank!

That depends on how difficult the competition for the keywords you're targeting is, how much time you have, and if you're outsourcing the backlinking what your budget is.

More than 5 it is really hard to mange and keep track of all the things.
