I have always been wondering if google is going to take 'product description' as duplicate contents? If so, what are some ways to prevent this? (i dont think its wise to rewrite product specs and description? Usually its provided by manufacturer / retailer anyways?) Thanks |

Yes that is duplicate content - just change up the products to a different description. I have an ecommerce dropshipping site that's similar to what your talking about but I rank because of my unique content.

I agree. Never use the same mfg. descriptions that every other site uses. Change it up, add some additional content (and keywords if they read well in the description) and you'll do much better in the SERP's. By the way, what gave you the idea that it is not wise to change up the description? Specs, as far as size, wgt, colors, options, etc., I would agree, but not the description. Most mfg. descriptions are pretty lame to begin with. Something else you might want to keep in mind is that one of the bigger complaints from online shoppers is the lack of detail in product descriptions online. They want more info. |

| Edit: The solution for your problem is adding more unique content then your cloned product description. If the (original) product description is 200 words, you'll need to add your own 400 words (600/3=200 that's 66% unique content). If you can create some sort of personal description why the product is good, the better. |

As an ecommerce copywriter I've written my share of product descriptions. You've got some great responses, here...although I don't necessarily agree that p.d's have to be 600 words long to be effective! Lets say you are shopping for a new barbeque. You walk into a showroom. Inside are 3 barbeques, all identical. One is just there on display. A handout on a nearby table gives you dimensions, etc. Next one has a salesman standing beside it. Looking bored, he hands you that same information sheet. You start reading the material but find yourself wandering over to barbeque number 3. There's a salesman here, too. Only he's talking about this barbeque to someone like it's really something special. He's enthusiastically answering questions and...wait a minute...he's cooking something on the barbeque that smells so good, it's making your mouth water. Is that a rotisserie he's using? You've always wanted one of those but weren't sure how they worked and now that you see (and smell) the possibilities, you want this barbeque. Only this one. Even though it's the same one as the other two when you checked it out you got answers you didn't even know you had! Just say no to boring manufacturer's descriptions. Add fresh content and you'll do better in the SERPS but more importantly you'll sell a barbeque or two! |
