Default keyword confusion: please help!

I have been doing a lot of keyword research trying to find a low competition keyword for my niche which happens to be a high competition niche.

When doing the research, I looked at the top 10 sites on google and some were article directories, yahoo answers, and some others. I have heard that that is good because those are easy to beat out because they are weak sites, and i have heard that they also have a ton of backlinks to its hard to beat out.

So basically should i pick that keyword phrase and have an easy time beating the "weak" sites, or keep looking for more keywords because those sites are hard to beat?

Thank you for your time

Check the backlinks of the top 3 sites and see what you are going to be up against.

Generally when I see article directories ranking for the keyword I want to use its generally a good sign for me, but sometimes those articles have been backlinked. You need to check for this with yahoo answers also.

You say keyword phrase, when you are doing keyword research make sure you are using exact match and not phrase or broad. I dont know if you have done this but it is common to make this mistake.

I want to review your IM product or service and promote it on my website PM me for details.
I want to guest blog on your IM related blog PM me for details.

ya i do an exact phrase. Ill even do the allinurl: and allintitle: ways of searching to see as exact as i can. Yahoo answers shows up, sometimes article directories. and what about youtube, if that shows up is it bad?

Also, i use SEOquake to determine backlinks and what not, but what does the huge number next to domain signify? for google and yahoo?

Youtube is not to bad to outrank, its also important to check the backlinks to the video though.

Im not sure about seoquake its been a long time since I used it.

What you really need to think abouty is how much time you are going to dedicate to getting your site ranked number 1. It sounds like you have done your homework. Just be prepared to do some backlinking to get ranked.

ya man i have tried to do as much homework as i can. This is my first go at creating a website, and I dont wanna mess up. What is your opinion on the number of backlinks I should stay away from. Like what is too much. I dont wanna get in over my head here. Again this is my first attempt so I would like to start off with something reasonable.

My niche is in the fitness/health niche. Not sure how much more detail I should go into, but it is a highly competitive niche is I were to try to target more basic keywords, which is why im trying to target long tail keywords which are less competitive

Why do you have to stay in that niche? Sell what you have and move on.

Dont give out any more details of your keyword. You never know who might be lurking around looking for keyword/site ideas.

As far as the backlinks its not always the amount but the quality. This is where good software comes into place. I use seo spyglass to check my competitors links. Its good to know how many links, the anchor text of the links, and the pr of the pages linking back. A few other things to, but this is what I look at.

After looking at all these factors, I will decide if I want to put the effort into ranking the site/keyword.

I do very good at promoting high competitive niches, diet, health, etc... so do not let that scare you away. I believe if you make a full effort you will get your keyword to rank. You should also look into other areas for traffic beside the SE's just in case you dont rank. Youtube, article dirtectories, and guest posting can provide some great traffic while helping you establish some seo to your site.

Maybe I am just lazy, but I put the keyword into Traffic Travis and let that tell me if the keyword is easy or hard. Takes the emotion out of it, and that software can tell me in just a very short time.
