Site Suddenly Dropped!

My site has been number one on the first page of google for about 3-6 months...today I see it has dropped to page 450 without warning...that's a massive fall for what?

The other day I shortened the posts on the front page so apart from the first post, it showed only the first 2 or 3 lines of each post...(meaning you need to click the "read more Button" to reveal the rest of the post. Could this be the reason my site was dropped? It is the only thing i have done to it recently and the site dropped straight after that so it seems likely...what do you think?

I think this could be the reason as hiding these posts also would have hidden the keywords and content displayed on that main page and that was probably the reason why the page was ranking well in the first place.

If this is the reason, it has been a good lesson to be careful not to alter your content if it has been ranking well consistently for a long time.

Any thoughts?

It's not the reason.

There are a number of reasons that could account for this. It may be the result of the Google algorithm update, it could be your domain has been assessed a sandbox penalty because it's new, you may be penalized because you're purchased links or used blackhat SEO practices.

There are about a million reasons why your site could drop. Hopefully it's just the dance and it comes back even stronger soon.

I'd remove your website from your post. Otherwise you may experience a sudden increase in competition.
