Keyword meta is it important at all to Google?

People-
I know that keyword density is important in the content of a page. What % is it that you all like best. I use up to about 12 keywords total.

How does that compare to your more successful sites?

Also, When I build a page, I pay attn to the title, meta description (only to hook the person searching the engines) and keywords. How important are keyword tags? I heard last year they were irrelevant to Google and yahoo and Bing like them. Know I heard this year that Google and Bing and Yahoo all pay attention to them, but very little.

Keyword tags and 'keyword density' are both largely irrelevant nowadays, but it definitely doesn't hurt to throw a few keyword phrases in both.

I have heard the same that they are irrelevant. But I still like to use them and throw them in for good measure. Honestly, I don't think Google will let us know the whole truth on the matter but it can't hurt so I continue to use the meta tags and descriptions for at least some of my keywords. But I have had companies score just as high and not use the meta tags at all.
