Default Is my keyword analysis correct or am i way off

I am new (only built two wordpress sites) that use some SEO. But recently I really want to tackle keyword searching. Below are steps i am taking and looking for feedback before I dive into purchasing domain names:

Step:
1. Come up with list of problems that I would like solved or things i am passionate about.
2. Take that list to Market Samurai and plug them in. Take whats left after MS filters and move onto to Google Adwords keyword search tool.
3. Google Adwords Keyword Search Tool - plug in my keywords and select "exact" match on left hand side to get an estimate of how many people are searching for that keyword/phrase.
4. Google insights - plug keyword in again to see what direction the keyword is heading in its cycle (is it mature and declining) or is it "breakingout" and trending up. Also get look at who this target market is (sex, age, location, etc)
5. Excel - plug in the numbers. This is where i might be missing something. Here is what i set up in excel
*Keyword
*Global/local results (from google keyword tool)
* Results (from putting "keyword" to see how many sites link this KW)
* Intitle - determine how many use KW in title of article
* Inurl - determine how many sites have KW in URL
* Cocktail - includes: Intitle, Inurl & anchor text to get picture of seo strength.
* CPC - i am really limited on CPC and PPC termonology but Google gives me CPC so I use it

I then take Global/local results and multiply that by 40% (that represents highest amount of clicks i could get by being number 1 ranked in SERP.

I then take that amount (global x .40) and multiply that number by CPC to get potential money i could make from advertising?

Am i headed in right direction?

Thanks
Carl

That looks very good. Very thorough, but don't forget to just use your brain in addition. Sometimes you can jump on keywords that you can predict a growth in popularity for. If you are talking specifically about "NFL Draft Rage" you will probably be able to predict the growth that you will not see in those tools. For example, you can bet that the 2012 draft is not getting many searches right now, but you can be sure it will ramp up. You can build a nice SEO strategy around future events for sure.

Those two steps will give you the same number, and your 'potential money..." will be way off unless you can figure out a way to get EVRY VISITOR to click an ad.

Not only will you not get paid the CPC that shows, that is what advertisers are paying to be on the SERP page, and The Content Network cost is much less than search. You will get 68% of what the advertiser pays. The ads appear from top to bottom in the order of what they are paying Google. So that CPC number is fairly useless.

I can tell you, from what I have learned, you should expect around 14% to 20% of that number for your clicks. But don't take that to the bank as there are a lot of variables.

thanks tim. Is there another unit of measure i can use to get an idea which keywords "could potentially" make. Google only provides that number and thus reason I used it. I know market samurai uses another formula.

Here's the formula I use to get a very rough estimate of what I think a keyword will make if I rank #1, 2, 3.

For #1 - Exact Monthly Search*.4*(CPC/3)*expected CTR

For #2 - Exact Monthly Search*.25*(CPC/3)*expected CTR

For #3 - Exact Monthly Search*.15*(CPC/3)*expected CTR

This is a very conservative formula, but I want realistic expectations because linkbuilding and content aren't free.

thanks everyone. So lets say I have 15 keywords (started with over 200) that have been filtered thru Market Samurai, Google Keyword tool, Google insights and I have determined that they key words have moderate "exact monthly searches" meaning they are in the range of 2,000 to 8,000 month searches and level of competition is low to moderate (determined by market samauri SEO competition and plugging in "intitle", "inurl", "inanchor" in google search. Is it best to set up webpage for each keyword....or should i tie similar KW together and just put them as categories in wordpress thesis theme i am using?

is your expected CTR something you have some up with from your experiences or are you using something off of google or another site for that?
