Default Damn! Yahoo Shutting Down Site Explorer

Yahoo is going to shut down the only Yahoo service I use regularly: Site Explorer.

Yahoo recommends that webmasters sign up with Bing Webmaster Tools and use that as Yahoo shuts off Site Explorer.

Yahoo makes it sound like that you won’t miss the old Site Explorer but I find it hard to believe that Microsoft will provide detailed link data for competitors. Of course there are plenty of third party tools to get at this data, such as Majestic SEO and SEOmoz but with the loss of Site Explorer, there will likely be no search engine-provided look at your back links.
Didn't Yahoo and Bing merge? I think that they'll help Bing step up to the plate. And while I've never tried those 3rd party sites, they look like they might be worth a try.

I am SEO.

What!? This really is indeed a bad news for everyone who uses Site Explorer. It has been a great tool for checking inbound links. Is it true that Yahoo and Bing would emerge?

Terrible news, they are making it tough and tougher on us. Is the Google Keyword Tool next?

Well, we all knew it would happen sooner or later, it was all much discussed in a couple of past months. I've found a decent alternative - ahrefs com - this is a backlink checking service with lots of useful options, and from my own experience, it has already left Yahoo! SE behind according to the results accuracy. If not this one, there are also many other which might easily substitute Yahoo.

That won't happen. The Google keyword tool was made for people wanting to buy adwords... not marketers. As far as Site Explorer shutting down... I'm just going to switch over to Majestic SEO.

The worse news is that once Yahoo Site Explorer gets shut down,
no other backlink tools will work correctly.

Other tools such as backlinkwatch, bluebacklinks, SpyGlass and etc
are using yahoo site explorer as the main tools.

That's the worst thing that will happen, I use it regularly for checking links and find it much better than others.

Most people have known that Yahoo site explorer was going to going away for some time.

Time to start using some of the alternatives, eg:

Open Site Explorer: Link Popularity & Backlink Analysis Tool

They didnt really shut it down, but they have stopped updating it for a long time after they merged the site explorer with Bing's webmaster tools

If you use almost any type of automated seo software that checks backlinks, then you are running YE (Yahoo Explorer).

Almost all of the seo software pulls data from YE,

BTW, Yahoo anounced this about 6-7 months ago on the Yahoo dev. site.

It's still an awesome tool to find good backlinks, that your competition already has.

Nothing else compares, IMO.

Correct, nothing else compares - unless of course you are prepared (and can afford) to pay insane monthly fees to Majestic, and from what I can tell, despite currently holding more up to date data, it's still a lot is slower to update than SiteXplorer used to be.

If it truly does switch off on the 15th Sept as stated on their blog, it's going to be a very dark day for many small SEO companies and a helluva lot of developers alike. A very sad day indeed.

Ahrefs looks promising, and seems more reasonably priced, but its bound to take some time before it can provide anywhere near as much data as Yahoo. Personally I don't like having to charge my clients the earth for SEO services, but every monthy fee has to be accounted for..

We already know that Market Samurai is transistioning to Majestic - but have they worked out a deal where they will be able to have access to all the link data for free..? - somehow I doubt it... I'll be intrigued to find out what LinkAssistant do with SEO Spyglass too.. that's two of the best desktop tools in the business - but there are many more besides - all of them rely on Yahoo for the bulk of their backlink data.
