Default Jumpstarting or growing gradually

Hi guys, good to see such a good forum, I'm sure I'll be hanging around here some more.

I have been researching for some weeks now about how to start and what to do in affiliate marketing. I will proably start with a niche site with some adsense and affiliate promotion, I see this as a safe start to get accustomed with tooling, research, hosting, website building and so on. I think I will copy doing so for a while, but doing some PPV, landing page, list building stuff is very interesting and promissing too. There's a lot more involved though. Buying traffic, using demographics, rotating, testing, statistics, and so on.

So I was wondering if anyone started doing this from the start? Is it nescessary / good practice to get accustomed first or is jump starting an option also?
