Default Question about SEO for an interesting domain situation

Here's the situation.....

I am targeting a "citydental". The .com is taken, but actually redirects to a dentist office elswhere. That dentist is across the country, states away from the one I'd like. The .net is in a different state as well, with a dentist that has the last name matching the city name I'm going after.

The .org is available for the city I'm targeting. Is it worth going after? I mean, am I competing against the .com and .net just as though they were in the same city I'm targeting? Or does it matter? Thanks

.org is supposed to be reserved for not-for-profit organizations.

If all others are taken, maybe go with .us instead of .org.

I've managed to rank .org domains just as easily as .com domains.

Content and SEO are King.

you didn't state where the .com was ranking for the term. exact match is a bit over rated and can be overcome with good SEO - particularly strong links.

You can go for .org, but it depends what you offer on the domain. I would recommend using hyphenated domain city-dental with .com. However, I have seen .org can easily compete with .com or .net, but .US might be difficult to catch up.

The "citydental.com" that I'm targeting gets redirected to a different .com name, in a different state (townnamesmiles.com) And the "town name" is different than the city name I'm targeting. Their site has a P2 rank. 0 Google backlinks, 36 Yahoo backlinks.

I'm not intending to come across as real knowledgeable with SEO cause I'm not. So, I don't know if that info answers your question.

Yea in my opinion .org is just as good as .com and .net. Besides, the domain is only a part of the ranking factor. Sure, it is a big help, but if you nail the rest of your SEO, you could rank with any domain name. Go for it.

Personally I would work up a different domain name. I don't like hyphens, but that would be an alternative.

As stated, the .org was supposed to be for non profits, even though a lot of people are now using them. I am uncomfortable using what was meant for a non profit if I am not.
