What is the benefit of a linkwheel? I have seen them on a lot of SEO sites, but what is the real benefit...if any...

They are very time consuming, but highly efficient. You can get many backlinks pointing to your anchor layers that point to your site. By doing this, you get the link juice, but don't get any drawbacks.

In other words, if any of the links are "bad", then google will not penalise you, as those links go to your anchor layers, and not straight to your site.
