Default Getting traffic to a news website

I have recently set-up a music site which is focused around rap and hip hop music including news, videos, reviews, etc. Everything is looking good and working fine but if someone could clear these questions up for me that would be great:

- At the moment my primary targets are broad and highly competitive, but i would like to rank for them in the long term. Should i change them to less competitive keywords for now?

- I know about all the ways that you get traffic to a website but i'm not sure how I can get traffic to my articles. I will publish a few articles a day about recent news, however loads of other sites i do the same thing about the same story.

So how do i get traffic to these news articles? I can't get into google news yet and the keywords that i am using for these are just the main tags from the article.

- In terms of backlinking, since my site is not just one page that sells a product, should i be focusing on backlinking new articles to get a better rank for them?

If anyone also has any experience with news websites that constantly publish new articles i would really appreciate it if you could give some advice in terms of SEO. Thanks

I think you should add at least 3 posts per week with minimum 300 words. Do some keyword research and find let's say 10 keywords get a total 10,000 exact match searches per month and then do backlinking for that.

Also pick a moderate to high keyword- keep building backlinks for this keyword consistently and at some point this will rank high as well, but at the begining, make sure you get traffic through those 10 keywords. You can always add more keywords if you like.

Your primary targets should be less competitive keywords for now, as you will get a good share of traffic for enough keywords that will amount to a good chunk of traffics.
As far as getting traffic to your articles I found out the best way to do that is to use Tweeter for your articles and place the links in FaceBook.
You will have a good amount of people going to articles site via Tweeter and Facebook.
Try it out and see how it goes, it should good. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Share your stories in twitter and facebook and use long tail keywords and bookmark your posted article often.

Thanks alot for the advice One thing that I am stuck on though is that apart using Facebook and Twitter to drive traffic to these new posts, should I try and build back links for these articles and focus seo on these. For example, a new story comes out about an artist so create an article about the story, but this article is probably only going to be popular in the first week then it will die down, and because of all the other sites creating the exact same story it will be hard to rank for. So should I instead focus on finding some low competitive keywords and create articles based around these for now?
