I usually go for anything above 100 exact global searches per month. With that being said, I don't fully trust the Google keyword tool, or any keyword tool to give the correct search volume figures. So I sometimes target keywords that they say have barely any searches, if I think it's a nicely targeted keyword with income potential. I usually target smaller volume keywords for articles/posts(each one is a separate opportunity to drive traffic to my site with different keywords) on my sites and in some cases micro niche sites themselves. You also have to consider how easy or difficult it is going to be to rank for your chosen keywords. A low volume keyword one is worth going for if it's nice and easy to rank for, but perhaps not so worth the time and effort if there is a lot of competition. There are a lot of tools out there to find out the level of competition, but I actually mostly use the free version of Traffic Travis to do so |

When I am doing keyword research I search for keywords with around 1000 exact searches. My local search is the US. So, if I have a product that will only be sold in the US I will go after local searches. However, the majority of the time I am looking to sell something globally so I use the exact global search. 1000 exact searches is what I generally look for, but I give or take a few hundred searches. I tend to never go below 700 exact searches per month unless the keyword is a buying keyword. A buying keyword with 300 exact searches per month can be pure gold on a smaller scale. Another factor I take into consideration is the cpc of the keyword if I am building a site for adsense. I will take a low amount of exact monthly searches if the keyword has a good cpc. |
