Link pyramid question to expert SEOs

What should be the anchor text of a link pyramid's second and third layer backlinks?

Should I always use the main keyword?
Should I mix my main and primary keywords as well as the open URLs(URLs that dont have any anchor text)?
I should not use any keywords for 2nd and 3rd layer backlinks?

Despite the many "experts" here you won't get one single answer to this. My strategy is NOT to use my main keyword, since I don't want to risk those other pages outranking my money page for the same terms. Others will disagree, saying that you DO want that exact keyword juice coming down to your money site.

What I do is this:

Money page: "red ladies hats"
Tier 1: "ladies hats" (not competing, I do not target this phrase, too broad)
Tier 2: "hats"
Tier 3 (if I go that far): VERY general article about "clothes"

So it goes more and more general the further away you get. I have used this with success. But then I have done all kinds of other things successfully too Actually, most things "work" - it's just doing them consistently where most people fall down. Pick a method, try it and see...

I discussed with Charless Livinngstone, assistant of Brad Callen. He wasnt able to help me about this matter. However ur answer is logical. I think this is the best strategy we should follow when building link pyramids.

Diversify!

Many users only focus on the same anchor text keywords as their money money sites. I'd recommend using a mixture of "money" keywords, secondary keywords and URL/no anchor text links.

This helps things look normal in the eyes of the search engine. Remember that diversification in anchor text links to your money site are also essential.
