The time it takes for keyword research can be short or long depending on: 1. The niche you're searching keywords for 2. The method of keyword research 3. The tools you use for keyword research. For me it can take quite a while (several hours) since: 1. I'm in a competitive niche 2. I have fairly strict criteria for my keywords The tools I use are: Google keyword tool (free to everyone) Market Samurai (paid version but there is a free version available) Micro Niche finder Traffic Travis (free version) |

It normally does not take me long to do keyword research, what takes me the time is testing and getting traffic. Chris

I only have two websites in two different niches and I don't really put much time into keyword research. I already have a huge list of keywords related to the niches and I just pick one random keyword from them everybody and write an article or two. Luckily enough, traffic is building up but I'm not sure if this strategy would last (since I'm not actually going towards low competition keywords or optimizing hard). |

I would spend a decent amount of time as it is very important. You definitely want at least 1000 local searches for any keyword you use. But even if the competition on google seems kind of steep if you know what you're doing with SEO I would still give it a shot and see what you can do with it. You never know.

It's an ongoing process. Don't make the mistake of generating a huge keyword list and then relying on it as you build your site. As long as you're building a site that you'll be adding content to regularly, you'll want to do keyword research as you go in order to find new keywords to target for your posts/pages. Things will change.... Maybe a keyword is much more competitive than it was 3 months ago. Or vice versa. Bottom line, don't make it a one-time thing! |

metalice, Your keyword research will determine how competitive you will be for free search traffic. A previous poster stated they do not spend much time on keyword research, and they pick random keywords. Your keywords will determine how people find the solution that you have to offer to their need. You either compete or you don't. Your keyword research needs to be narrow and well defined. Ignore this and you are not likely to suceed in driving search traffic to your site. PS: I devote a full day to picking a keyword, if I get it in just a couple hours, I go shopping! |

My advise would be this: be careful of analysis paralysis .. researching in place of action is a dangerous thing for success.

So use this for ROI calc: CPC * Traffic Estimate = Value per visitor, then sort on vpv this is a rough calc obviously, but it gives you a real starting point.

In most cases it takes me 30mn to an hour to research a niche. As far as the tools go I use Google, MNF, and NF keyword research tools.

First evening, I'm choosing main keywords, and brainstorm them with my friends or on forums. At the end of the first evening I have a list of different keywords, related to my niche. Second evening I research this list with semrush to find long-tail keywords, with low competition and high search-volume. My list becomes bigger, and I finally check all these words with google tools.
