uploading videos to my members site

Ok, I've been trying to do this with a few players (JW, flowplayer, easy player, etc.) I basically have videos fora new members site and since they're large file I used the add from server plugin to upload them through my ftp. the thing is neither player is able to play them. I get error messages such as "access denied" or " can't find video" I've been on google for the past few day and couldn't figure t out, I can only assume it has something to do with the way I upload the video via ftp. If anyone can help, I will greatly appreciate it.
