Default Merchant Sites vs Info Sites

I'm doing some more keyword research, this time using buying keywords, but the first page of google always has merchant sites. I remember hearing from another thread that merchant sites got a boost from the newest update, but what I'm thinking of is it's only for buying keywords. I'm unfamiliar with how to create an Amazon site so I'm sticking to info sites right now. So is it possible to beat these merchant sites with an info site, assuming that site age, backlinks, and on page SEO is beatable? Or do merchant sites have a boost for buying keywords, in your experience.

Google changes so often that it is really annoying. Last year's "Mayday Update" was very hostile to merchant's site. Now they have reversed it completely this year with the "Panda Update". In fact, there are lots of collateral damage around with many high quality sites with unique content affected.

As for Amazon, there are various shop scripts available which has probably done quite well in this update. Just Google "Amazon Store Script" and do some research.

Google puts merchants on top because they think you want to buy
the product. Silly google.

That's why it's difficult to rank higher for any specific product on amazon, buy,
etc. They don't rank because of freshness, PR, or anything except sheer
authority for buying the product. When anyone with half a brain decides
to go online for a product, they think of amazon. Well, why wouldn't
google think the same? People are stupid, really, they can't get it through
their skulls that they should just go to amazon.com. (Same reason why
friggin "facebook" is a top searched for word).

But you get around that by not trying to rank for the product, but a longer
tail keyword revolving around terms for people thinking about buying
the product(s). Like "best books for new lawyers."

You hit the nail on the head. "buying" keywords are for buyers. Why would
google send them to your site and not amazon, a buyer's paradise?
Give them a reason.

Paul
