Default banned domain - expired - bought

Assume that a domain got banned on Google because of Black Hat SEO. Domain expired after a year and I bought it and launched my site on it. Will I also get the legacy ban (though the domain got expired and I bought it as fresh)?

Great question, seotxl one that I never really thought of before. Expired domains are really good to buy and I would also like to know the answer to this question. If anyone has had experience with this it would be great to hear what happened.

I don't think Google is going to penalize you because G can tell who owns what. Just like you don't get the page rank of an expired domain, it wouldn't make any sense to inherit its ban. You inherit the age of it, and if it was recently expired, you might pick up whatever traffic it had before it expired.

I have one that was first registered in Aug/09 before I bought it as an expired domain this month. Its indexed and PR0 and the Aug/09 shows up in SEOquake as the domain age.

You may be able to find out more by doing a site:domain.xxx search in G as it will still be there as cached page at least 90 days from when it expired. If nothing shows up it was either de-indexed, never indexed, or just isn't G's cache any more. If you can see it in the cache then you know at least that it wasn't de-indexed as once a site is de-indexed, its wiped completely from G and there is no cache of it to be found.

Those are some thoughts on it, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable on this can chime in.

wouldn't think so.. if it does get you penalized you can easily take it up with the google webmaster forum and they'll sort it out.

sure you can buy it because Google will forget it and it will know you are the new owner!

You should not have any problems with your expired domain and Google.

LOL, I bought an expiring domain last Dec. 2011. Published 10 unique articles [word count = 1000+ for most articles, drip feeded]. Made backlinks on homepage and inner pages. Made Google analytics, submit sitemap to google websmaster tools. Still it hasn't been indexed by google. So I think the expiring domain I bought got penalized by G. Sighhhhh any help ?

I won't suggest choosing this kind of domains, according to limited personal experience, most of time those domains will take longer time to get reindexed by Google for the penalty they've got before. So you'd better check them first before your purchasing.

Chances are you will have a harder time getting it indexed/ranked. Eventually Google will probably figure out you're a different owner, but keep in mind many black hatters will do everything they can to try and trick Google into thinking the domain is with a new owner in order to get it out of such penalties/bans, so don't assume Google will think it's with a new owner.

If it has a previous block on it, it may not get indexed. I had the same issue. Submitted a reconsideration request with GWT explaining the site was bought as an expired domain and were there any issues from previous ownership ? They indexed my site after manually reviewing the site. They explained that the domain was banned because of spam previously.

You won't get it indexed.

Get a new domain, start fresh.

Always make sure when buying a new domain you head over to the WaybackMachine and see if there has ever been a previous website.

Lesson learned by most of us.

I agree, I think google probably has a long memory and it strikes me why would they be interested at all in whether a site they had once banned had changed hands or not e.g. the fact that is has changed hands is not really going to be of any interest to them unless its of a youtube/twitter size. Sorry if that seems a bit harsh and I do not want to get shot down in flames as I agree old domains can bring good traffic, but put yourself in their shoes...they probably just don't care and are will have no reason to move it back out of the mythical sandbox.

I can tell you for sure the ban will remain. You have to request a reinclusion as the new owner.

Yeah I've had problems with domains like that before...iv'e heard it's possible to get the penalties lifted if you're a new owner if you contact Google and plead your case...but I've never been able to do it successfully...

I DONT think you inherit the age of the domain, but I am not certain

once it expires and is deindexed, (assuming it was deindexed) doesnt google Age domains depending on when they first found it? not sure what happens if it expires and is then deindexed and then is reregistered and found again by google

This... and don't ask for reconsideration with MFA type of site, they won't lift the ban.

After reading all of this, I wouldn't even try it. If I'm interested in an expired domain, I'm following what Spyder said and checking Google's cache of it. If there is no cache, no buy. Not taking any chances on something like that.

yeah agreed. If google once banned the domain...you're better off getting a new one and starting from scratch. If you add articles and links and find that your site still isn't indexed..ummm yeah then there is a problem for sure. I mean I've bought new domains and had them indexed in hours.
