What types of links act as backlink and also could bring traffic?

I know theoretically any link can bring traffic, but realistically a lot of backlinks do not (e.g. profile links).

I would probably say links like signatures in relevant forums, relevant blog comments, article links on various sources (directories, squidoo, etc..) to name a few. I guess it really matters whether you are getting that link in right context in front of the proper audience more than anything. Not many people are going to look at a profile link, like you said.

I think the link that does both the best would be from a guest post on a popular blog. Besides that, article marketing works well for both, especially when your article is syndicated well. Blog commenting is better for links, but you can get traffic from them too albeit usually not much. Forum links are much more useful for traffic than backlinks.

Here's a tip to measure - start using bitly links and track the clicks you're getting.

The link which created in high rank websites i.e directory,social bookmarking ,forum,articles and blog etc are show back link very quickly,also the sites have do follow attributes as there is no benefit of no follow link as they do not create back link and help to promote a websites.

There are so many different places to get links that it can take so much time to search/gather all these links. Also some of them will not even be indexed. I wouldn't go for a spammy shotgun approach. But you can use free services such as Pixelpipe, Ping.fm, hellotxt etc to get links from authority sites. Some are better than others in giving you anchor text links. Those sites are actively seeking content and you can post to all those sites from one location. Also you only need a simple post rather than a lengthy article. Some of those sites allow you to distribute videos, pictures and audio.

if a popular blog makes a post about your website or talks about you and has a link back you will get link power as well as traffic which is awesome
