Default Use of hyphens in EMD's

Does anybody do this?

Is it a good thing? Bad thing?

Any advice would be cool

I would prefer without hyphens but I understand using hyphens to be next best thing. This is not necessarily fact, just the situation as I have read.

I've managed to get sites ranking for the exact match with hyphens (even for double hyphens).

Of course, if it's a hugely competitive industry, then you're going to struggle, but for some phrases it does work.

This is ture. Rather you can get a good name using hyphen which may not have any negative impact as you are thinking.

I've used hyphens in the past.

SEOmoz puts out a big report every two years in regards to data they collect on their own. They found a slight correlation with hyphens and worse rankings. It was only slight. It was not drastic. And it was only a correlation, which doesn't mean it is absolute proof.

Just something to consider.

Very good point about this not being absolute proof as SEOmoz do stress that "Correlation does not imply causation"
My personal experiences with EMD have been positive due to the fact that it is very easy to source anchor text links which contain the keywords you are targetting within them. Other benefits such as targetted keywords in your url being boldedwithin the search results when it is ranked highly the respective phrases it contains helps with CTR.

I really struggle to believe that Google penalise the domain name you chose... more so what you choose to do when optimising it.
