Normally new sites ( less then 1yr old ) get de-indexed from Google if they are too agressive or un-natural with their link building.

Normally it happens when a site build a ton of similar backlinks over a short period of time and then does nothing as follow up afterwards.

You have to look at what you did on your sites that might be seen as sketchy.

Do you have pop-ups?
Duplicate content?
Link to some sketchy sites?
Blast your link out everywhere using software?

These are common sandbox issues.

The way to get out is:
1. Fix the errors
2. Build some quality backlinks steadily

I agree. If people just work on their content - there would be a lot less crying about things.

Good point.

Using automated tools could be one of the factors for your site to be deindexed.

I suggest you to take a look at Google Webmaster Tool Guidline:

Webmaster Guidelines - Webmaster Tools Help

I think all those paraghraphs are gold. The page also answers a lot of newbie questions.
Also take a look at the following page and scroll down to the last paraghraph:

Duplicate content - Webmaster Tools Help

So your problem is unlikely be due to the duplicate content.

Seriously, can you even tell the difference between de-indexed and sandboxed?

They are two different things altogether, you know?

The misinformation given away is just astounding.

If you do a search in Google.com for - site:www.yourwebsite.com - and your website doesn't appear, it is de-indexed.

If your site still appears but it just doesn't rank well no matter what you do, it may be sandboxed.

The sites that get deindexed are mostly spam or do not have relevant seo keywords to the site itself.

Sites that have aggressive link building are also deindexed.
