What are your thoughts? =) I have seen sites with no keywords in their domain succeed, but it seems rare.

Exact match domains are still playing a factor in ranking. However, not as much as they once used to. Country specific domain extensions such as co.uk help too, when you are trying to rank in Google for searches made from UK. The general belief though is that exact match domains will eventually become less and less effective from a ranking point of view in the future. Although nobody knows for sure. I continue to use EMDs, along with numerous other things I do to help me rank. |

It's important, but it's not that important. Also, you can add words at the end of the keyword if the EMD is not available. You can also do .net if .com isn't available. |

Although EMDs have been devalued a fair bit, they're still one of the strongest ranking factors. If you can get it, I'd go for it. Or at least a PMD.

It has been my experience that exact match domains are always much easier to rank then domains with additional verbage. I've experimented with both and time after time the exact match domains begin receiving traffic sooner, and much more of it then their non exact match counter parts. Could just be a coincidence, but these days when I'm looking for keywords, I only choose those with an exact match domain. |

When you're up against authority sites, then having an EMD is still valuable when starting a new site. And if you don't have too much competition then they definitely still help you rank higher quicker.

Hi cybertrash, Having your keyword in the domain name isn't important at all. What is important is having your keyword in your URL. Having you keyword in the domain name is just a surefire way to include your keyword in every URL on your website, but it is not the only way, just a good way. |

It depends on your goals. If your site is targeted to one microniche, then ya it sure helps. If you have an authority site then it's less of an issue. At some point brandability comes into play. |

It's helpful but it's not the be-all, end-all of SEO. I have a site that made me $1500 last month and it has no keywords in the domain name. My home page is ranking in the top 1-5 for over a dozen different keywords and in spot 1 for at least half that. It probably would have been easier to rank with an EMD but the end result is what counts.

If you have you keywords in your domains, that will be an added advantage. But your can succeed without EMD also, like, very popular websites like twitter, facebook etc focus on their branding rather than keyword targeting. You should focus on your brand promotion through your domain name, there are tons of ways available for promoting your keywords. |

There are numerous other factors too playing on the position of the site or the blog in the search pages. Of course having keywords in the domain name works.

| Depends on the competition. If you're building smaller sites in niches without an enormous amount of competition an EMD can put you on page 3 or better instantly. You can definitely optimize a site for a keyword / phrase without having an EMD. But the EMD will usually give you a bit of a boost initially. |

Keywords are very important in SEO. Once your site become so popular might be keywords are not mandatory. Popular sites are not having keywords that means they must be focusing on many topics.

Actually, the domain name is the major integer for search engine optimization but its just a mini - tweak for the General Keyword regarding to your content is located on your domain. Like for instance your keyword and your targeted users are related to Health insurance then eventually a domain name consisting health insurance is better for a search engine indexing process. But the majority of branding and marketing is not needed to use long words so you eventually don't need a domain name for seo. |

Useful info here, thanks! I have a couple of domains that don't contain keywords, and I was thinking of replacing them. But now I'll keep them and just focus on great SEO and content, and have keywords in urls, titles and headings. Thanks, Andy |

This has been exactly my experience as well. I had a EMD for a term with 5400 exact match searches sit on page 2 for a couple months with nothing but a default wordpress install on the domain, no content at all. (I was busy with other domains) | |
